NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM 3 debuts at no. 1!

Singapore - NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: SECRET OF THE TOMB debuts at the top of the box office in the final weekend of 2014. It grossed US$1,611,017 from 66 screens for a muscular US$24,409 screen average. Throw in sneaks and the cume soars up to US$1,720,796.

Last weekend's champ, THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES retreats into the runner-up spot with a not too shabby takings of US$904,358 for a US$3,586,279 total to date.

The only other debut in the top 10 is horror sequel THE PACT 2 which comes in at no. 10 with US$23,401 from 3 screens.

Two films debut outside the top 10: China romance comedy LOVE ON THE CLOUD 微爱汁渐入佳境 (US$13,373 / 5 screens) and the French biopic SAINT LAUREN (US$6,243 / 2 screens).

THE FIVE ARMIES conquer no. 1!

Singapore - THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES tops the box office (with the following premium options available: 3D, HFR 3D, IMAX 3D, IMAX HFR 3D, D-Box, Dolby Atmos and Dolby Atmos 3D). The fantasy finale grossed US$1,859,194 from 105 screens for a good US$17,707 screen average. THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY started with US$1,729,846 from 107 screens while THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG began with US$1,750,602 from 102 screens.

Other debuts include the remake of ANNIE (US$81,608 / 21 screens) and the sci-fi thriller PREDESTINATION (US$48,422 / 8 screens).

Indian films only get mentioned periodically on this blog due to lack of figures, but PK, the new Hindi film from Rajkumar Hirani is noteworthy as it has been doing brisk business over the weekend at Jade Theatre and nine GV cinemas.

EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS makes way to no. 1!

Singapore - Three new film dominate the top spot this weekend with EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS leading the batch. The Ridley Scott epic grossed  US$973,694 from 87 screens (including 3D and IMAX 3D) for a so-so US$11,192 screen average.

Family films PADDINGTON and STAND BY ME DORAEMON take the next two spots with respective debuts US$207,278 from 26 screens and US$183,742 (including sneaks) from 20 screens. Everyone's favorite Japanese robot cat also has a 3D option, along with several screens offering a Mandarin dubbed variation.

Other debuts include Thai horror O.T. GHOST OVERTIME (US$19,399 / 7 screens), French comedy SERIAL (BAD) WEDDINGS (US$13,019 incl. sneaks / 2 screens) and a re-release of FROZEN in a brand new sing along version on limited screens.

PENGUINS make it 2 weeks at the top!

Singapore - PENGUINS OF MADAGASCAR score a second weekend at no. 1 as the top three films remain unchanged. THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY - PART 1 and BIG HERO 6 maintain their positions at no. 2 and 3 respectively.

The Penguins have amassed US$1,481,222 to date, while the Katniss pic and Disney's latest hit animation have accumulated US$3,359,419 and US$3,296,119 respectively.

The highest debut is horror flick THE PYRAMID at no. 4 with US$249,761 from 19 screens. Other debuts include Disney's family friendly ALEXANDER AND THE TERRIBLE, HORRIBLE, NO GOOD, VERY BAD DAY (US$132,843 / 27 screens), John Woo's epic romance THE CROSSING 太平轮:乱世浮生 (also in IMAX 3D) (US$87,567 / 27 screens), indie thriller NIGHTCRAWLER starring Jake Gyllenhaal (US$59,005 / 9 screens) and Japanese anime NEW INITIAL D THE MOVIE (US$7,345 / 3 screens).

PENGUINS grab hold of no. 1!

Singapore - PENGUINS OF MADAGASCAR debut at no. 1 with US$730,669 from 65 screens for a US$889,088 total (including sneaks and 3D options). The spin-off opened 43.94% weaker than the last outing from parent film MADAGASCAR 3: EUROPE'S MOST WANTED, which started with US$1,585,819 (including sneaks) from 69 screens back in June 2012.

Other debuts include the latest cinematic version of Wong Fei-hung with Eddie Peng as the lead in RISE OF THE LEGEND 黄飞鸿 (US$329,194 incl. sneaks / 33 screens), comedy HORRIBLE BOSSES 2 (edited for M18 as '"language that denigrates religion or is religiously profane" is not allowed for all ratings') (US$294,177 incl. sneaks / 34 screens), Thai romance horror THE EYES DIARY (US$25,129 / 4 screens), Pang Ho-Cheung's WOMEN WHO FLIRT 撒娇女人最好命 (US$24,511 / 9 screens) and the drama VERY GOOD GIRLS (US$2,058 / 1 screen).

Singapore - THE HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY - PART 1 takes the box office crown with US$1,690,008 from 94 screens for a US$17,979 screen average.  That's 15.45% behind THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE which opened on 91 screens; but 22.96% more than THE HUNGER GAMES which opened with US$1,374,433 from 56 screens.

A FANTASTIC GHOST WEDDING 非常婚事, the 9th local release of the year is the only other debut that makes the top ten. It grossed US$109,678 from 15 screens for a decent US$7,312 screen average.

BIG HERO 6 clinches box office crown!

Singapore - Disney's animated adaptation of an obscure Marvel property, BIG HERO 6 takes the top spot this weekend with US$1,180,173 from 66 screens (including 3D and sneaks). It's the 20th film to debut above US$1m this year.

INTERSTELLAR falls to no. 2, but has now grossed US$2,343,785 and is currently the 19th highest grossing film of the year.

Other debuts include the comedy sequel DUMB AND DUMBER TO (US$150,747 / 18 screens), which arrives twenty years after the original; horror JESSABELLE (US$90,766 / 9 screens); WAYANG BOY 戏曲小子, the eighth local release of the year (figures unavailable, but probably between US$34K-US$52K); Johnnie To's DON'T GO BREAKING MY HEART 2 单身男女 2 (US$29,254 / 5 screens) and the conspiracy thriller KILL THE MESSENGER (US$16,018 / 3 screens).

INTERSTELLAR reaches no. 1 station

Singapore - INTERSTELLAR reaches no. 1 with US$1,176,064 from 87 screens (including IMAX). It's the 19th film to debut above US$1m in 2014; but scores the lowest screen average (US$13,518) amongst the million dollar debut club.

Other debuts include mystery thriller BEFORE I GO TO SLEEP (US$90,175 / 13 screens), comedy drama THE BEST OF ME (US$81,725 / 20 screens) and Taiwanese drama PARADISE IN SERVICE 军中乐园 (US$32,758 including sneaks / 9 screens).

Figures for these new releases are not available: Malaysian horror SEVENTH 守夜, Irish horror THE CANAL (edited for M18 rating), THE SCRIBBLER and French animation JACK AND THE CUCKOO-CLOCK HEART.

KUNGFU JUNGLE rocks no. 1 spot!

Singapore - KUNGFU JUNGLE 一个人的武林 kicks its way to no. 1, becoming the first Asian film to dominate the top spot this year with US$632,800 from 44 screens for a hefty US$14,382 screen average. However, it's only the 4th highest grossing debut for an Asian title this year, behind THE LION MEN 狮神决战 (US$935,042), THE MONKEY KING 西游记之大闹天空 (US$746,318 including sneaks) and FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 赌城风云 (US$695,072).

This is action star Donnie Yen's third blockbuster release in 2014 following THE MONKEY KING (US$1,198,233 total) in January and ICEMAN 冰封侠:重生之门 (US$887,171 total) in April.

FURY and OUIJA lead box office

Singapore - FURY leads a pack of new flicks and storms the no. 1 spot with US$535,614 from 48 screens (including IMAX) for a low US$11,159 screen average. Throw in sneaks and the Brad Pitt war pic has grossed US$809,101 to date.

Fright film OUIJA takes the runner-up spot as it starts with US$239,944 from 14 screens for the week's highest screen average of US$17,139. Total with sneaks is US$267,543.

The Keanu Reeves headlined JOHN WICK collects a US$231,890 paycheck from 27 screens for a so-so US$8,589 screen average. Also new is comedy LET'S BE COPS with US$250,197 from 20 screens (including sneaks); while Hong Kong horror comedy SIFU VS. VAMPIRE 天师斗僵尸 scares up US$106,827 from 12 screens for a good US$8,902 average.

GONE GIRL surfaces at No. 1

Singapore - With no strong debuts, GONE GIRL ascends to the top of the box office during its second weekend with just US$277,225 for a final cume of US$755,714. It's one of those rare times when a non-no. 1 debut film gets replaced by another of the same. Last weekend's box office champion, ANNABELLE drops to no. 4 with a cume of US$2,109,372 to date.

GONE GIRL holds up strongly in its second weekend, dipping a slim 11.3% and rises up to become the top average earner with US$11,551 per screen. However, it's the lowest grossing no. 1 film of the year, but the first R21 rated film to reach the top since Box Office Mojo started publishing figures in 2007.

The highest debut is THE JUDGE starring Robert Downey Jr., which clocks in at no. 3 with US$212,826 from 33 screens.

Twin Horrors Maintain Grip on Box Office Pinnacle

Singapore - Last weekend's top two films swap positions as ANNABELLE takes the lead while DRACULA UNTOLD slips into the runner-up spot. ANNABELLE beats DRACULA to the podium by a slim US$4,898. The Conjuring prequel has grossed US$1,764,102 to date and is also narrowly ahead of The Conjuring which had grossed US$1,738,027 by its second weekend on the way to a US$2,164,452 finish last year.

Universal's DRACULA UNTOLD has amassed a total of US$1,943,749 to date.  

The highest debut comes from David Fincher's missing wife thriller GONE GIRL, which grossed US$312,386 from 24 screens for a US$395,054 total including sneaks. It's the biggest opening for a R21 rated film this year, besting the US$300,389 opening of THE WOLF OF WALL STREET which started on 15 screens in January and grossed US$1,270,281 by the end of its run.

2nd Biggest Oct Weekend with DRACULA and ANNABELLE taking the leads

Singapore - DRACULA UNTOLD and ANNABELLE push the Hari Raya Haji weekend to become the second highest grossing October weekend ever. DRACULA UNTOLD also becomes the 18th film to debut above US$1m this year, while both debuts score screen averages above US$20K. ANNABELLE is the highest screen average earner of the weekend and the 8th highest for 2014.

Launching on 52 screens (including IMAX), the reimagined origin of the infamous vampire lord from Universal Pictures and Legendary Pictures grossed US$1,050,924 for a scorching US$20,210 screen average.

THE EQUALIZER makes a soft debut at no.1

Singapore - Action thriller THE EQUALIZER debuts at no. 1 with US$436,823 from 45 screens (including IMAX) for a US$9,707 screen average. It's the 3rd lowest grossing no.1 debut of the year and and has the lowest screen average amongst no. 1 debuts. Only THE LEGEND OF HERCULES (US$394,887) and BRICK MANSIONS (US$369,517) started with less but both films racked up a higher screen average counts.

THE EQUALIZER's gross is comparable to last weekend's A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES. The thriller which is also anchored by an established action star started with US$356,339 from 40 screens for a US$8,909 screen average.

THE MAZE RUNNER reaches no. 1!

Singapore - THE MAZE RUNNER clinches the top spot over the weekend with US$1,395,892 from 57 screens (including IMAX) for a mighty US$24,489 screen average. That's the 4th highest amongst films released this year, and the highest for a film that's released on less than 100 screens. MAZE is the 17th film to debut above US$1m this year. Throw in sneaks and it has grossed US$1,397,238 to date.

Box office figures for AFTERIMAGES, the 6th local release of the year is not available. The horror omnibus, which is released on 11 screens probably grossed between US$47,752 and US$75,192.

Singapore - STEP UP: ALL IN continues the winning streak of the dance franchise by making a debut at the top (also screening in 3D). The version screened in local theatres has been edited for a PG rating. It grossed US$650,931 from 35 screens for a mighty US$18,598 screen average.

Overall, the Top 10 films grossed US$2,016,985 - a 14.6% increase from last weekend; and a 0.02% increase from the same frame a year ago when PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS spent a 2nd weekend at no. 1.

New films fail to steal the no.1 crown from LUCY

Singapore - LUCY maintains its hold at no.1, having grossed US$2,449,915 after two weekends.

The edited NC16 version of NOVEMBER MAN, starring the former James Bond, Pierce Brosnan opens in the runner-up spot with US$249,081 from 31 screens.

The highest screen average performer of the week comes from RUROUNI KENSHIN: KYOTO INFERNO (edited for PG13 rating). The Japanese period action film collects US$218,017 from 17 screens for a strong US$12,825 screen average. KYOTO INFERNO will be followed by THE LEGEND ENDS, the second part of this sequel on 9 Oct. The first film opened on only two screens in 2012, but ran for more than two months and grossed S$353,641 (estimated US$286,511).

LUCY makes no. 1 debut

Singapore - Luc Besson's LUCY starring Scarlett Johansson debuts at no. 1 with US$1,455,514 from 66 screens (including IMAX) for an amazing US$22,053 screen average. It's the 16th film to debut above US$1m this year; the 2nd highest amongst films that are not a sequel or a reboot; and is one of seven films to manage a screen average above US$20K (it ranks 6th on this list, and is the only one that's not a sequel or reboot).

Also making its debut is the Chinese martial arts pic THE FOUR 3 四大名捕大结局 (US$121,704 / 11 screens). The original flick THE FOUR 四大名捕 opened with US$207,004 on 23 screens on its way to a US$424,428 finish in 2012; while the sequel THE FOUR 2 四大名捕 II screened earlier this year with a US$134,132 start on 9 screens and a US$220,402 cume.

NINJA TURTLES fend off THE EXPENDABLES 3 from no. 1

Singapore - The TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES hold on to the no. 1 spot for a 2nd weekend as it picks up another US$678,355 for a US$2,532,988 total to date.

THE EXPENDABLES 3 is the week's highest debut with US$634,544 from 42 screens and a US$15,108 screen average. Throw in sneaks and it has collected US$778,265 to date. In comparison, the original action stars ensemble flick opened in 2010 with US$612,711 from 29 screens for a stronger US$21,128 screen average; while the sequel in 2012 began with US$982,183 and a more muscular US$25,847 screen average from 38 screens.

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES stomp no. 1!

Singapore - The rebooted TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES from producer Michael Bay debuts at no. 1 this weekend with US$1,395,761 from 77 screens (including 3D) with a mighty US$18,127 screen average. Throw in sneaks and its total stands at US$1,449,438. It's the 15th film to debut above US$1m this year and its screen average is slightly ahead of last weekend's chart topper, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY.

GUARDIANS slip into the runner up spot and picks up another US$1,098,943. It's only the 4th film to gross more than US$1m over two weekends in 2014. Its total gross is now US$3,305,650 and it's the 10th film to cross US$3m this year.

Singapore - Marvel Studios score their second no. 1 of the year as GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY debuts at the top with US$1,785,046 from 101 screens (including 3D and IMAX 3D) for a strong US$17,674 screen average. It's the 7th highest debut of the year and the highest for a film that's not a sequel or a reboot of an existing franchise. It's also the 14th film to debut above US$1m this year.

Other entrants include the airline horror mystery thriller 7500 (US$142,980; US$250,696 including sneaks / 13 screens), THE WHITE HAIRED WITCH OF LUNAR KINGDOM 白发魔女专之明月天国 starring Fan Bingbing (US$107,291 / 19 screens); Korean erotic drama OBSESSED starring Song Seung-Heon (US$45,670 / 5 screens); Thai horror HONG HOON (US$17,123 / 10 screens) and Rob Reiner's comedy drama romance AND SO IT GOES (US$11,280 / 3 screens).

HERCULES rocks at no. 1!

Singapore - The son of Zeus makes his second appearance at no. 1 as Dwayne Johnson's HERCULES debuts at no. 1 spot with US$1,223,351 from 83 screens (including 3D and IMAX 3D). Earlier this year, THE LEGEND OF HERCULES managed to hit no.1 with only US$394,887 from 25 screens.

HERCULES is the 13th film this year to debut above US$1m, but it also has the weakest screen average of US$14,739. Back in April, NOAH debut at no. 2 with US$1,012,591 with a screen average of US$14,891.

Also new this weekend is Japanese horror JU ON 3: BEGINNING OF THE END with US$128,508 from 13 screens with a screen average of US$9,885.

APES maintain hold at #1

Singapore - DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES spends a 2nd weekend at no. 1. Its total cume now stands at US$2,527,649.

Holding at no. 2 is TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION, which has now grossed US$8,340,162 to date. The no. 1 film of 2014 is also currently the 5th biggest all-time box office champ, and one of 5 films that have grossed more than S$10m locally.  

Thai horror CURSED HOUSE is the highest debut at no. 3 (US$61,140 / 11 screens), followed by Clint Eastwood's musical biography JERSEY BOYS at no. 5 (US$55,582 / 25 screens).

Singapore - DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES takes the top spot with US$1,343,869 (including 3D) from 79 screens and a screen average of US$17,011. It's the 12th film this year to debut above US$1m. DAWN starts bigger than RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (2011), which began with US$806,110 from 42 screens but a stronger US$19,193 screen average.

TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION drops to no. 2 after two weeks at the top. The fourquel has now grossed US$7,965,558, making it the highest grossing film of 2014 and the 5th highest grosser of all time.

TRANSFORMERS 4 commands no. 1 for a 2nd Week!

Singapore - TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION maintains its grip on no. 1, adding another US$1,855,959 to its coffers. That's 71.68% of all tickets sold over the weekend. The Michael Bay behemoth has now grossed US$6,911,701 to date and is on track to become the top film of 2014. It's currently the 3rd highest grossing film of the year and the 9th highest grossing film of all time.

Debuts this week include the horror DELIVER US FROM EVIL (US$198,283 / 25 screens), the comedy TAMMY (US$125,979 / 25 screens), corruption thriller Z STORM Z风暴 (US$87,076 / 14 screens) and romance comedy BEGIN AGAIN (US$71,786 / 12 screens).

Overall, the Top 10 films sold US$2,589,323 worth of tickets - a 46.4% drop from last week's record setting weekend, and a 23.06% dip from the same frame a year ago when DESPICABLE ME 2 opened at no. 1

TRANSFORMERS 4 blows past US$4.1m in 4 days!

SINGAPORE - TRANSFORMERS: AGE OF EXTINCTION opens on 150 screens (including 3D and IMAX 3D) for a gargantuan US$4,171,943. That makes it the widest release to date, as well as the highest grossing film from Thursday through Sunday during its opening weekend. It also helps to set a new record for the highest grossing weekend haul by the Top 10 films (with AGE OF EXTINCTION contributing 86.38% to the total).

The previous widest release was THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 on 134 screens just two months ago, while the biggest 4-day opening weekend gross was previously set by IRON MAN 3 with US$3,761,476 last year. The Top 10 films also sold US$4,829,695 worth of tickets - a new peak that exceeds the summer blockbuster weekend of June 2, 2011 when X-MEN: FIRST CLASS and KUNG FU PANDA 2 led the box office to a total cume of US$4,236,701.

DRAGONS 2 spends 2nd Week at #1

SINGAPORE - HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2 reigns at no. 1 for a 2nd weekend. It has now grossed US$2,875,443, which places it as this year's 7th highest grossing film and highest grossing animated film to date.

New in the runner-up spot is the youth romance drama THE FAULT IN OUR STARS, with a fantastic US$540,489 from 28 screens for a mighty US$19,303 screen average. Throw in sneak previews from the past two weekends and its total gross stands at US$698,006. STARS is now also the top grossing romance drama of the year in a field where there is virtually little competition. ENDLESS LOVE, which opened in February started with US$103,528 from 22 screens for a US$148,497 final.

DRAGONS 2 Dominates Box Office!

SINGAPORE - HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2 stakes its claim to the top of the box office with US$1,742,924 from 65 screens (including sneaks) and a splendid weekend screen average of US$18,350. The animated sequel (also screening in 3D and IMAX 3D) is the 10th film to start above US$1m this year.

Four years ago, the first DRAGON debut with US$1,455,044 (including sneaks) and a US$16,004 screen average from 51 screens and ended its run with US$2,968,823.

EDGE puts Cruise back at no. 1

SINGAPORE - Tom Cruise's new sci-fi flick EDGE OF TOMORROW becomes the 9th film to debut above US$1m this year. SINGAPORE - X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST maintains its grip on the top spot as MALEFICIENT debuts at no. 2.

The new Bryan Singer flick collects another US$1,669,611 and brings the total for the mutant super hero pic to an astounding US$5,819,768 in just 11 days of release. That's slightly ahead of what THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, this year's top film to date grossed after its second weekend (US$5,600,043).

Meanwhile, MALEFICENT starts with US$1,244,814 from 63 screens (including 3D) for the week's highest screen average of US$19,759. It's the 7th biggest debut of the year and the 8th film to start above US$1m this year.

X-MEN is no.1 as total box office sales crosses US$4m!

SINGAPORE - X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST grabs hold of the no. 1 spot with US$3,203,248 from 116 screens over the weekend, including 3D for a US$27,614 screen average - the highest to date this year. Throw in Wednesday's sneak previews and the total tally amounts to US$3,377,922. That's enough for the new X-Men flick to become the third highest grossing film of the year to date behind THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 (US$7,008,048) and CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER (US$6,012,468).

The Bryan Singer mutant flick is also the second biggest debut of the year behind THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, which started with US$3,774,303 (including sneaks). Back in 2011, X-MEN: FIRST CLASS opened on 40% less screens but scored an impressive US$24,638 screen average for a US$1,724,673 opening total.

SINGAPORE - GODZILLA stomps away with the title of 3rd biggest opening film of the year, including sales from 3D and IMAX 3D. It grossed US$1,951,498 from 90 screens for a mighty US$21,683 screen average. This year, only THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 (US$3,774,303) and CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER (US$2,399,271) opened bigger.

Meanwhile, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 becomes the top film of 2014 even as it leaps past the previous Spidey pic to become the 7th highest grossing film of all time in Singapore. It has amassed US$6,806,819 (S$8,513,493) to date and looks set to challenge THE DARK KNIGHT RISES (S$8,945,251) and KUNGFU PANDA 2 (S$8,959,626) in the coming weeks.

SINGAPORE - THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 sticks to the top spot for a second weekend as it moves closer to becoming the top film of 2014. Dropping a hefty 63.3% from its gargantuan opening week, ASM2 picks up another US$1,255,926 to boost its total tally to US$5,600,043.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER, currently the top film of the year with US$5,983,587 dropped 46% during its second weekend, while THOR: THE DARK WORLD and IRON MAN 3 dipped 53.7% and 49.5% respectively.

THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 is 3rd Biggest Debut of All-Time!

SINGAPORE - With 134 screens (including 3D and IMAX 3D), THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 is possibly the widest release in Singapore ever. It grossed US$3,417,583 over the weekend - enough to become the second highest grossing film of the year behind CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER (US$5,958,168 to date).

The tally rises up to US$3,774,303 with Wednesday's sneak previews added. This makes the latest Spidey pic the 3rd biggest opening film of all time in Singapore behind THE AVENGERS (US$5,766,054) and TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON (US$4,162,564). Both THE AVENGERS and ASM2 also had the benefit of opening on the Labour Day holiday.

SINGAPORE - BRICK MANSIONS find itself at no. 1 with just US$369,517 from 35 screens. It's possibly the lowest grossing no.1 debut at the box office this year.

Other debuts come from the horror OCULUS (US$151,919 / 16 screens), MUPPETS MOST WANTED (US$54,470 / 21 screens) and Thai horror SHE-DEVIL (US$25,186 / 10 screens).

Meanwhile, British comedy CUBAN FURY has grossed US$37,944 by its 3rd weekend while Hong Kong thriller THAT DEMON WITHIN 魔警 has amassed US$93,343 as of its second weekend. Figures for both films were previously unavailable.

SINGAPORE - Most of the new entrants this week reap healthy sales with TRANSCENDENCE making a debut at no. 1. The Johnny Depp sci-fi flick grossed US$605,827 from 37 screens (including IMAX) for a strong US$16,374 screen average.

Donnie Yen's ICEMAN 冰封侠:重生之门 proves to be one of the biggest opening Mandarin films this year with US$508,891 from 32 screens (including a single 3D venue) for a mighty US$15,903 screen average. It's currently the 4th highest grossing Mandarin film this year, behind THE MONKEY KING 西游记之大闹天空, which also stars Donnie Yen.

SINGAPORE - RIO 2 debuts at no. 1 with US$725,046 from 47 screens, including 3D.

Last weekend's reigning champion CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER grossed another US$652,812 as it drops down to the runner-up spot. The Marvel Studios pic, which is also the year's top film by far has grossed US$5,175,086 to date. It's trailing 10.89% behind fellow post-Avengers sequel pic THOR: THE DARK WORLD, which had grossed US$5,807,849 by its third weekend on its way to a US$6,300,035 final. CAP 2 looks likely to finish near that final tally as well.

SINGAPORE - CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER spends a second weekend at no. 1 and is now the no. 1 film of 2014. It grossed another US$1,296,030 for a US$4,263,837 cume to date. That's already more than what CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER grossed in its entire run in 2011 (US$3,556,772).

Late last year, similar sequel THOR: THE DARK WORLD grossed US$4,954,073 by its second weekend on its way to a US$6,300,035 final. Even though CAP 2 is trailing 13.93% behind THOR 2 at this point, its position as one of the year's top grossers is already secured.

SINGAPORE - Steve Rogers and gang take command of the no. 1 spot as the various versions of CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER (3D, D-BOX, Dolby Atmos, etc but surprisingly no IMAX version) storm the chart.

It's the first blockbuster release of the year to open on more than a 100 screens (102), grossing US$2,399,271 with a mighty US$23,522 screen average. This easily makes it the biggest debut of 2014 and the 5th biggest film of the year to date. THE WINTER SOLDIER also scores the third highest screen average debut of the year behind FROM MACAU TO VEGAS 賭城風雲 (US$25,743) and ROBOCOP (US$23,816).

Last weekend's top movie 300: RISE OF AN EMPIRE breaks pass the US$2m mark to become the 3rd highest grossing film of the year to date with US$2,137,206 and counting. SINGAPORE - Liam Neeson continues to prove his box office worth as he displaces himself as no. 1 with the new action flick NON-STOP, which pulls in US$952,515 from 48 screens for an astounding US$19,844 screen average. It's the second biggest debut this year behind ROBOCOP, which kicked off with US$1,428,935.

Neeson is also part of the voice talents from THE LEGO MOVIE, which drops to no. 2 after 3 weeks at the top. THE LEGO MOVIE has grossed US$2,108,710 to date, and is this year's 2nd biggest film behind ROBOCOP, which has grossed US$3,025,097 so far.

Overall, the top ten films grossed US$2,336,635 - a 43.6% dip from last weekend and a 18.26% dip from the same frame a year ago when AH BOYS TO MEN 2 新宾正传 II spent its second weekend at no. 1.

ROBOCOP, LION MEN and FROM VEGAS TO MACAU push CNY Weekend Sales Pass US$4m!

SINGAPORE - The rebooted version of ROBOCOP becomes the first film of 2014 to gross over US$1m in its debut weekend and the 2nd film to score a screen average above US$20K. With grosses coming in from 60 screens (including IMAX), the sic-fi action flick pulled in an impressive US$1,428,935.

Coming in 2nd and 3rd place are strong debuts by THE LION MEN 狮神决战 (US$935,042/50 screens) and FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 赌城风云 (US$695,072/27 screens). MACAU has the additional distinction of scoring the weekend's highest screen debut (US$25,743) - also the highest for 2014 so far.

Overall, the top ten films grossed US41,374,656, which is a minuscule -0.1% off last weekend and a 11.02% dip from the same frame a year ago when THE IMPOSSIBLE debut at the top spot.
