'The French Dispatch' arrives in cinemas

Singapore - Wes Anderson's The French Dispatch is the widest release this week. Also new is the latest Chinese blockbuster, Schemes in Antiques.

Koozhangal, India's submission to the Oscars' Best International Feature Film category opens at two Cathay cinemas. The film debut at Carnival Golden Mile last week following its Singapore International Film Festival premiere.

Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui, a romantic comedy featuring a trans character opens on 9 Golden Village screens. 

Mr. Peiyii, a Malaysian Tamil language horror comedy about a jiangshi - the mythical Chinese hopping vampire opens at GV Yishun and Carnival Golden Mile.

Other releases include Monster Family 2, American Girl, Night Raiders and the concert film Monsta X: The Dreaming.

The Battle at Lake Changjin, the year's highest grossing film in China and internationally opens at no. 2. Animated sequel The Addams Family 2 opens at no. 5.

Concert film ARASHI Anniversary Tour 5x20 Film: Record of Memories, which had 4 sessions this past weekend appears in the top ten for the first time at no. 9.

M18-rated 'Eternals' opens with US$1.35m

Singapore - Eternals debuts at no. 1 with US$1,359,272, becoming the highest grossing debut for a M18 rated film this year and possibly during the pandemic era.

In comparison, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings started with US$1,597,685 in September. Earlier in March, Godzilla vs. Kong opened with an estimated US$1.62m (S$2.19m). Shang-Chi and GVK are both rated PG13 and opened on a Wednesday, while Eternals sneaked on a Wednesday before its full release on Thursday.

The box office debuts for The Suicide Squad and Mortal Kombat, two high profile M18-rated wide releases earlier this year were not reported on any box office sites such as Box Office Mojo and The Numbers

Singapore - NO TIME TO DIE (PG13) blasts into the no. 1 spot with US$813,000. Four weeks ago, SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS (PG13) opened with US$1.41m, and that's excluding its Wednesday opening numbers. The final James Bond opened at a time when Covid-19 numbers are on the rise. The number of new cases detected in the country was 2,478 on its opening day, compared to only 177 when SHANG-CHI opened.

SPECTRE (PG13), the last James Bond film that opened in 2015 started with US$1,764,844 and finished its run with US$4,598,137.

THE SUICIDE SQUAD lands in theatres over National Day weekend

Singapore - James Gunn brings THE SUICIDE SQUAD (M18) into theatres alongside the Covid-19 drama CHINESE DOCTORS (PG) for this long National Day weekend which runs from Saturday through Monday.

Concert pic BLACKPINK THE MOVIE (PG) starts a day earlier on Wednesday while TINA (NC16), the documentary about the rock icon opens on Projector screens.

OLD (PG13) and THE MEDIUM (M18) will also sneak this weekend.

Singapore - JUNGLE CRUISE (PG13) claims the no. 1 spot with US$238,276 from cinemas. The action adventure flick is also available on Disney+ with Premier Access.

SNAKE EYES: G.I. JOE ORIGINS (PG13) slips from the top to no. 3.  Holding on to no. 2 for another week is BLACK WIDOW (PG13), which has amassed US$1,974,771 to date.

JUNGLE CRUISE sails into cinemas and Disney+ PA

Singapore - JUNGLE CRUISE (PG13) is the only main wide release in theatres this week. It's also available on Disney+ with Premier Access from Friday.

THE TOLL (NC16) and GAGARINE (NC16) are the only two other new releases.

SNAKE EYES snatches away #1 spot

Singapore - SNAKE EYES: G.I. JOE ORIGINS (PG13) takes the box office crown as BLACK WIDOW (PG13) slips into the runner-up spot. GUNPOWDER MILKSHAKE (M18) is the other debut at no. 6.

After three weekends, BLACK WIDOW has grossed US$1,879,906.
