SINGAPORE - The rebooted version of ROBOCOP becomes the first film of 2014 to gross over US$1m in its debut weekend and the 2nd film to score a screen average above US$20K. With grosses coming in from 60 screens (including IMAX), the sic-fi action flick pulled in an impressive US$1,428,935.
Coming in 2nd and 3rd place are strong debuts by THE LION MEN 狮神决战 (US$935,042/50 screens) and FROM VEGAS TO MACAU 赌城风云 (US$695,072/27 screens). MACAU has the additional distinction of scoring the weekend's highest screen debut (US$25,743) - also the highest for 2014 so far.
Other debuts include HUAT AH! HUAT AH! HUAT! (US$174,234/17 screens); GOLDEN CHICKENSSS 金鸡SSS (US$143,182/17 screens) and HELLO BABIES 六福喜事 (US$9,877/10 screens). HELLO BABIES basically drowned in the sea of Lunar New Year releases and is the worst debut of the year to date.
The long awaited visual effects spectacular THE MONKEY KING 西游记之大闹天空 starring Donnie Yen sneaks on 28 screens (including 3D) and pulls in a mighty US$324,831.
Overall, the top ten films over the Lunar New Year Box Office Weekend grossed US$4,139,224 - which is the second highest in the last eight years (and possibly of all time). This represents a 81.44% increase over the same frame a year ago when AH BOYS TO MEN 2 新宾正传 II debut at the top spot.
