SINGAPORE - HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2 stakes its claim to the top of the box office with US$1,742,924 from 65 screens (including sneaks) and a splendid weekend screen average of US$18,350. The animated sequel (also screening in 3D and IMAX 3D) is the 10th film to start above US$1m this year.
Four years ago, the first DRAGON debut with US$1,455,044 (including sneaks) and a US$16,004 screen average from 51 screens and ended its run with US$2,968,823.
The second highest debut is Jack Neo's THE LION MEN: ULTIMATE SHOWDOWN 狮神决战之终极一战 with US$381,109 from 30 screens and a US$12,704 screen average. Earlier this year, THE LION MEN 狮神决战 grossed about two and a half times as much, starting with US$935,042 from 50 screens and a US$18,701 screen average. The first film in the 2-parter eventually grossed US$1,668,382 after a 7-week run. Trying to recoup its hefty S$4m budget for both films domestically will now be a very difficult task.

Meanwhile, X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST has overtaken THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 to become the top film of 2014. In its 4th weekend, X-MEN has collected US$7,209,049 to date. Disney's MALEFICENT joins the US$3m club and is now the 5th highest grosser of the year with US$3,172,909 and counting.
In its 2nd weekend, the Tom Cruise sci-fi flick EDGE OF TOMORROW joins the US$2m club, becoming the 11th film to do so this year. Its total gross now stands at U$2,048,381. It is performing slightly ahead of OBLIVION, last year's Tom Cruise sci-fi pic which had grossed US$1,958,259 by its 2nd weekend.
Also in its second weekend, the Hong Kong sex comedy NAKED AMBITION 3D 豪情 grossed a total of U$27,596 to date (figures unavailable last week).
Meanwhile, youth romance THE FAULT IN OUR STARS sneak for a second weekend, picking up another US$96,142 for a pre-opening total of US$157,514.
Overall, the Top 10 films grossed US$3,146,634, a 0.7% dip from the last weekend and a 15.14% drop from the same frame a year ago when MAN OF STEEL soared into the no. 1 spot.
