TAKEN 3 takes no. 1!

Singapore - TAKEN 3 (PG13) easily grabs the no. 1 spot as it opens on 79 screens, while last week's chart topper SEVENTH SON falls to no. 3.

Oscar hopeful THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING (PG13) opens on 15 screens and debuts at no. 4.

The first local film of the year BRING BACK THE DEAD 招魂 (PG13, 22 screens) debuts at no. 6, while Tsui Hark's THE TAKING OF TIGER MOUNTAIN 智取威虎山 (NC16, 15 screens) debuts at no. 7.

Films that start outside the top ten include the youth sci-fi flick, YOUNG ONES (PG13, 3 screens), Taiwanese drama SECOND CHANCE 逆转胜 (PG13, 2 screens) and the critically acclaimed new film from director Mike Leigh, MR. TURNER (M18) opening on a single screen.

Box Office Mojo, which went without updates from 16 Nov 2014 has started to publish the missing weeks. Rather than to do a revised update, I thought I'll just add an appendix to compare how accurately I counted the number of screens. For movies opening on lots of screens (usually multiple prints at single locations), I tend to get the numbers wrong. For releases in the teens or single digits, the discrepancy (if any) is minute.
