Singapore - TERMINATOR GENISYS is the widest debut this weekend but its claim to no. 1 will face a strong challenge from reigning champion MINIONS.
Last weekend, the animated family pic grossed an estimated U$2.24m in its first 4-days. It may fall 40-50% this weekend, which means a further gross of US$1.12m-US$1.34m. (DESPICABLE ME 2 dropped 43.1% in its second weekend)
Based on comparisons with other major Hollywood releases from a year ago, GENISYS could kick off somewhere between US$1m-US$1.4m. Both films have about the same number of sessions, but I'll bet on the Minions' current popularity to give them the slim lead they need to stay one step ahead of John Connor and company.
Below is my prediction of this coming weekend's top ten films, based on the estimated number of sessions on Friday.
Box Office Prediction (25 - 28 Jun)
1 (1) Minions (PG) 444 sessions
2 (-) Terminator Genisys (PG13) 430 sessions
3 (2) Jurassic World (PG13) 273 sessions
4 (3) Poltergeist (PG13) 100 sessions
5 (-) The Black Death (M18) 44 sessions
6 (5) San Andreas (PG13) 16 sessions
7 (-) Twenty (NC16) 14 sessions
8 (-) American Heist (M18) 13 sessions
9 (6) Barely Lethal (PG13) 10 sessions
10 (4) Insidious: Chapter 3 (PG13) 10 sessions
We'll find out how accurate the number of sessions translates into actual rankings once the box office top ten gets published after the weekend (usually at the end of Monday).
