CARS 3 leads trio of wide releases

Singapore - CARS 3 (PG), AMERICAN MADE (M18) and THE ADVENTURERS 侠盗联盟 (PG) open wide this week. CARS 3 is also available in 3D and AMERICAN MADE on IMAX.

Other new releases include THE TAG-ALONG 2 红衣小女孩 2 (NC16) (estimated 14 locations), THE SON OF BIGFOOT (PG) (13 locations), TULIP FEVER (M18) (8 locations) and THE MIMIC (PG13) (7 locations).

Specialty releases with limited sessions include Marvels' INHUMANS (PG) on 3 IMAX screens, THOMAS & FRIENDS: JOURNEY BEYOND SODOR (G) (7 GV screens), THE IRREGULAR AT MAGIC HIGH SCHOOL THE MOVIE: THE GIRL WHO SUMMONS THE STARS (NC16) (3 GV screens) and ONE HEART - THE AR RAHMAN CONCERT FILM (PG) at GV Suntec and Carnival Cinemas.

THE BATTLESHIP ISLAND steals no. 1 from newcomers

Singapore - THE BATTLESHIP ISLAND (NC16) ascends to no. 1, becoming the first film to do so this year. The last non-debut new no. 1 film was SULLY (PG13), back in the weekend of 19 Sep 2016. And prior to that, TRAIN TO BUSAN (NC16) hit no. 1 in its third weekend during beginning 22 Aug last year. ISLAND's cumulative is an estimated US$744,948.

Cut for a lower rating PARADOX 杀破狼.贪狼 (NC16 Edited) is the highest debut in fourth place with an estimated US$132,763, followed by ONCE UPON A TIME 三生三世十里桃花 (PG) in fifth place, TOKYO GHOUL (NC16) in sixth place and ROUGH NIGHT (R21) in seventh (US$41,677).

Edited PARADOX amongst Asian debuts

Singapore - PARADOX 杀破狼.贪狼 (NC16 Edited) leads another trio of wide releases that include TOKYO GHOUL (NC16) and ONCE UPON A TIME 三生三世十里桃花 (PG). It's one of those rare weekends where the widest opening films are non-Hollywood titles.

Debuts on limited screens include ROUGH NIGHT (R21), KILL SWITCH (PG13) (3 Shaw screens) and BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB: ADIOS (PG) at Lido only.

AMERICAN MADE (M18) (including IMAX) and CARS 3 (PG) sneaks over the weekend.

PARADOX is the 13th edited release this year, and the 8th in which an uncut version was held back in favor of the edited cut.

ANNABELLE: CREATION scares off trio of new releases

Singapore - ANNABELLE: CREATION (NC16) continues to conjure up scares at no. 1 for a second weekend. It has grossed an estimated US$1.63m to date.

THE BATTLESHIP ISLAND (NC16) is the highest debut at no. 2, with a US$337,540 cume, while two other wide releases, THE HITMAN'S BODYGUARD (NC16 Edited) and 47 METERS DOWN (PG13) start at no. 3 and 6 respectively.

Debuts on limited screens include ZOMBIE FIGHTERS (NC16) (9 screens), JOJO'S BIZARRE ADVENTURE: DIAMOND IS UNBREAKABLE (PG13) (4 GV screens), AN INCONVENIENT SEQUEL: TRUTH TO POWER (PG) (8 screens) and BORN IN CHINA (G) (3 Cathay screens) (US$2,340).

ANNABELLE: CREATION conjures up #1 scares with US$1.09m

Singapore - ANNABELLE: CREATION (NC16) tops the box office with an estimated US$1.09m. THE EMOJI MOVIE (PG) starts with US$433,942. Both films open wide on National Day, a Wednesday along with GIRLS TRIP (M18), which grossed US$14,620 (including sneaks) from 3 Cathay screens.

Other  debuts starting on Thursday include A DAY (PG13) (6 GV screens), A FAMILY MAN (PG13) (3 Shaw screens) and THE SLEEP CURSE 失眠 (R21) (3 screens).

Specialty title BRIGSBY BEAR (NC16) opens exclusively at the Projector, grossing US$780.

Amongst holdovers, WOLF WARRIOR II 战狼 II (NC16) has collected an estimated US$748,239 to date.

ANNABELLE: CREATION and THE EMOJI MOVIE start early

Singapore - ANNABELLE: CREATION (NC16) and THE EMOJI MOVIE (PG) have an early start opening wide on National Day (Wednesday).

GIRLS TRIP (M18) sneaked on Wednesday on 3 Cathay screens and opens on Thursday. Other titles starting on Thursday include A DAY (PG13) (6 GV screens), A FAMILY MAN (PG13) (3 Shaw screens) and THE SLEEP CURSE 失眠 (R21) (3 screens).
