SINGAPORE - AH BOYS TO MEN 2 easily tops the box office, becoming the first film in 2013 to gross over US$1m in its debut weekend. A new record is also set for the highest debut for a domestic film (US$1,237,801). The previous record holder was its predecessor, which started with a marginally lower US$1,232,895 but a stronger screen average of US$33,321 from 37 screens.
Regardless, BOYS 2's screen average of US$28,132 from 44 screens is still spectacular, with only two films scoring screen averages above US$28K in 2012. BOYS and BOYS 2 have already grossed a combined total of US$6,316,725. If BOYS 2 follows the same trajectory as the first film, the combine gross could cross US$10m.
Wong Kar Wai's long awaited martial arts epic, THE GRANDMASTER starts with US$506,657 from 32 screens, which includes sneak previews from the previous week. Other commendable debuts include the horror parody A HAUNTED HOUSE, which collected US$49,578 from 6 screens for a screen average of US$8,263 and a cumulative total of US$52,447. Also starting out strong is Dustin Hoffman's directorial debut, QUARTET,with takings of US$8,167 from a single screen.
Oscar Best Foreign Language Film nominee, A ROYAL AFFAIR opens with a dismal US$3,250 from one screen, while the Stallone action pic BULLET TO THE HEAD also fails to excite with US$33,005 across 15 screens for a dismal US$2,200 screen average.
Also debuting but unranked is Oscar Best Picture nominee BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD, which is screening exclusively at FilmGarde Bugis+.
Last week's no. 1 film, HANSEL AND GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS falls 54.4% and adds another US$378,308 for a US$1,467,385 total to date.
Meanwhile, domestic hit TAXI! TAXI! ends its 5-week run with US$1,168,419. The film is currently playing in neighbouring Malaysia and has grossed US$760,998 after just two weeks. In comparison, AH BOYS TO MEN grossed US$663,015 after a 6 week run across the Causeway.
Overall, the top ten films grossed US$2,281,317, which is 32% higher than the week before, and 16.49% ahead of the same frame from a year ago when UNDERWORLD: AWAKENING ruled the no.1 spot. This pre-Lunar New Year weekend is also 147.92% higher than the pre-Lunar New Year weekend from 2012, which witnessed the lowest weekend gross of 2012 with US$920,170 from 29 films and CONTRABAND holding the no. 1 spot.
