SINGAPORE - AH BOYS TO MEN 2 continues to rewrite records as it picks up another US$524,400 for a US$5,663,674 total over the weekend. By Monday, the film had grossed S$7.08m and became the 10th highest grossing film of all time in Singapore just behind SPIDER-MAN 3 (S$7,922,865). It's also the first film to command the no. 1 spot for 4 straight weeks since Box Office Mojo started tracking the Singapore box office in April 2007. It's also the top screen average movie of the weekend with US$14,983 from 35 screens.
The other Lunar New Year blockbusters continue to hold off new contenders as A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD and JOURNEY TO THE WEST: CONQUERING THE DEMONS take the no. 2 and 3 spots, with cumulative grosses standing at US$2,009,597 and US$1,639,545 respectively.
Arnold Schwarzenegger's return to a leading role, THE LAST STAND is the highest debut of the week, grossing US$127,295 (US$146,187 including sneaks) from 20 screens for an okay US$6,365 screen average to take the no. 4 spot. Rounding up the top 5 is Robert Zemeckis's FLIGHT, a drama about an alcoholic pilot starring Denzel Washington with US$117,149 from 14 screens and a strong US$8,368 screen average.
ONE PIECE FILM Z, the Japanese manga blockbuster that is released on 6 screens scores a whopping US$12,252 screen average after 3 weeks of sneak previews. It collects US$73,514 over the weekend for a US$118,354 total to date. Meanwhile, the 3D re-release of MONSTERS, INC gobbles up a mighty US$10,094 from a single screen.
Top Oscar nominee LINCOLN opens on 11 screens and grosses US$90,986 for a strong screen average of US$8,271. Other Best Picture Oscar nominees in release with increased sales include ZERO DARK THIRTY (up 17.3% with US$11,610 for a US$461,245 total), SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK (up 22% with US$8,910 for a US$342,403 total) and ARGO, which grossed an additional US$9,890 (up 151.3%) for a US$1,024,695 total in its 15th consecutive week of release.
The re-rated re-release LES MISERABLES added another US$14,012 for a US$2,248,268 total (both PG13 and NC16 versions combined) while LIFE OF PI collected another US$3,243 for a US$3,126,337 total in its 13th consecutive week of release.
Other new releases include the all-star R21 rated comedy MOVIE 43, which collects US$26,066 from 5 screens for an okay US$5,213 screen average. Opening to so-so numbers is the romance SAFE HAVEN which collects US$95,566 from 20 screens and a screen average of US$4,778 with a US$129,793 total (including sneaks). The single print HYDE PARK ON HUDSON starts with US$4,237.
With a total of 11 new films being release, the Hong Kong drama romance TOGETHER falls flat with a US$26,519 opening from 10 screens (US$2,652 screen average and US$27,671 total including sneaks) while the Thai horror COUNTDOWN literally arrives D.O.A. with US$6,350 from 7 screens for the year's worst recorded screen average to date - US$907.
The 6th domestic film of the year RED NUMBERS opens quietly on a probable 5 or less screens but is unranked by Box Office Mojo. The film is released by Cathay-Keris Films and is helmed by first time director Dominic Ow. Another unranked film (and Oscar Best Picture nominee) BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD ends its run after 4 weeks. Box office figures are not available.
Overall, the top ten films collected US$1,464,922 - a 36.5% dip from the previous weekend and a 0.69% dip from the same frame a year ago when THIS MEANS WAR was the top film.
