SINGAPORE - JACK THE GIANT SLAYER climbs to the top of the box office with a US$1,097,754 haul from 68 screens (including 3D and IMAX) for a US$16,143 screen average. It's a stronger debut than A GOOD DAY TO DIE HARD - the top Hollywood film in Singapore to date this year, which started with US$799,183 from 54 screens over the Lunar New Year period. DIE HARD 5 has amassed US$2,087,479 in its 4th week of release. JACK also looks likely to cross US$2m when it reaches the finishing line but it will be facing strong competition from OZ: THE GREAT AND POWERFUL opening this week.
AH BOYS TO MEN 2 - last week's no.1 film drops 48.2% and collects another US$271,906 for a US$6,070,803 total to date. BOYS 2 has been depreciating at a rate that is a rarity and the envy of most blockbuster releases. A spot as one of the year's Top 5 grossers is almost a given.
Other debuts this week include 9.9.81, a Thai horror film that is unranked by Box Office Mojo, but probably grossed in the region of US$80,676 and US$271,906 from a probable 17 screens. THE MAN WITH THE IRON FISTS - the martial arts homage starring Russell Crowe and Lucy Liu starts with US$63,856 from 11 screens for an okay US$5,805 screen average. Also making its debut is the single print release BEKAS, a film about two orphans from Iraq who want to travel to America to meet Superman. BEKAS grossed US$5,177 - okay but not fantastic.
Unranked debuts include HABIBIE & AINUN, the biopic on Indonesia's former president B.J. Habibie on 2 Cathay screens and acclaimed Indian director Goutam Ghose's SHUNYO AWNKO, a Bengali film with limited screenings on a single Cathay screen from 3 Mar.
Overall, the market's top ten films films grossed a total of US$1,826,281, a 24.7% increase over last week's performance, and a 10.16% increase over the same frame from a year ago when ACT OF VALOR ruled the box office.
