SINGAPORE - IRON MAN 3 holds on to the top spot for a 3rd consecutive week, grossing US$852,821 for a US$9,103,895 total to date. The Tony Stark pic has now flown past TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON (2011) to become the 3rd highest grossing film of all time in Singapore. By this time next week, it could overtake AVATAR (2009) and occupy the runner-up spot.
The Marvel Studio pic is now trailing 10.25% behind the other Marvel Studios pic, THE AVENGERS (2012) when final grosses for both films after their third weekends are compared. THE AVENGERS grossed a total of US$11,172,253 to become the all time box office champion last year. IRON MAN 3 could now finish somewhere between US$9.5m to US$10m - which is way past my original prediction of US$7.3 to US$8.2m.
The horror remake EVIL DEAD debuts in the runner-up spot with a hearty US$116,834 from 8 screens to score the top screen average of the week with US$14,604. The Sam Raimi produced gore pic also enjoys the best debut for an R21 rated film in over 16 months. THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO (2011) started with US$249,019 (including sneak previews) and a weekend screen average of US$11,212 more than a year ago.
The highest grossing R21 rated film of all time is probably Ang Lee's LUST, CAUTION (2007). The controversial erotic drama grossed an estimated US$778,256 (S$1,102,264) - almost twice as much as the NC16 version that was released earlier. BUGIS STREET (1995) is reported to have grossed S$1m (US$719,223) - making it the highest grossing domestic R21-rated film, or R(A) as it was known back then - a record that will be hard to beat today. EVIL DEAD is likely to finish its run with around US$269,000 - which is pretty good for an R21 rated film released on only 8 screens. THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO, released on 17 screens finished with US$573,539.
The all-star ensemble comedy THE BIG WEDDING started with U$109,356 for a so-so screen average of US$5,207 on 21 screens, while the Robert Redford drama THE COMPANY YOU KEEP takes off with a weak US$21,564 on 7 screens and a US$3,078 screen average.
DAVID LOMAN 大尾鱸鰻 - a huge hit in its home market Taiwan failed to crack the Singapore Top 10, grossing a terrible US$18,694 on 7 screens for a measly US$2,671 screen average. The version released in Singapore also had all its Hokkien dialogue dubbed into Mandarin.
Meanwhile, STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS sneaked over the weekend on 86 screens (including IMAX and 3D) for a US$346,557 total - more than all the new releases combined.
And for the record, the unranked single print release SEARCHING FOR SUGAR MAN ends its run after 3 weeks. Box office figures are not available.
Overall, the top ten films grossed US$1,690,858 - a 29.4% drop compared to last week, and about 41.70% lower than the same frame a year ago when THE AVENGERS spent its second weekend at no. 1.
