SINGAPORE - FAST & FURIOUS 6 zooms pass all competitors and arrives at the top of the box office with US$2,417,921 from 65 screens (including Wednesday sneaks), accounting for 65.47% of all tickets sold this weekend.
It's the 3rd biggest opening film this year, behind IRON MAN 3 (US$3,761,476) and G.I. JOE: RETALIATION (US$2,428,150) and the 9th biggest opening film in seven years. It also scores the second highest screen average during this same period (US$35,363), behind IRON MAN 3 (US$37,995) and ahead of AH BOYS TO MEN 新兵正传 (2012) (US$33,321).
The latest instalment of the lucrative franchise is also the biggest, opening significantly stronger than FAST & FURIOUS 5 (2011) which started with US$1,411,648 on 40 screens on its way to a US$3,514,117 finish.
FURIOUS 6 also opens at no. 1 in South Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, the Philippines and Hong Kong this week and may find itself heading for a US$6m finish. This would easily make it one of the Top 5 films of 2013. As it is, it's already the 4th biggest film of the year so far behind IRON MAN 3, AH BOYS TO MEN 2 新兵正传 II and G.I. JOE: RETALIATION.
Last week's no.1 movie, STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS drops 48.8% and collects another US$495,335 for a US$2,038,104 total to date with a US$2.4m finish still in sight.
THE GREAT GATSBY dips a small 28.5%, adding another US$290,618 for a US$806,314 total to date and may conclude with US$1.1m, which is slightly higher than originally estimated.
Meanwhile, 2013's top film IRON MAN 3 scoops up another US$227,367 as it passes the US$10m mark with US$10,076,292 in the bank and a possible final tally of US$10.3m.
The family animated undersea adventure SAMMY 2 opens on 16 screens (including a single 3D print) with US$84,683 while EMPEROR, the historical drama starring Matthew Fox and Tommy Lee Jones starts with US$33,026 on 6 screens.
Hong Kong courtroom drama CHRISTMAS ROSE 聖誕玫瑰, which marks the directorial debut of actress Charlie Yeung 杨采妮 opens with US$29,074 from 9 screens. The film also opens this week in China, Hong Kong and Malaysia.
AT ANY PRICE, that other car racing movie starring Zac Efron and Dennis Quaid grosses a weak US$19,013 from 6 screens while the Taiwanese romance comedy WILL YOU STILL LOVE ME TOMORROW? 明天記得愛上我 starts on 2 screens for a US$9,943 total. THALE, the Norwegian fantasy mystery horror chalks up a meek US$2,848 from a single screen.
PLATINUM DATA, the Japanese mystery suspense released exclusively at Filmgarde on 2 screens is unranked. The Japanese blockbuster grossed US$25,920,896 domestically and has taken US$129,840 in Hong Kong to date. Box office figures for Singapore is unavailable at this point.
