SINGAPORE - 2 GUNS aims for the top spot and hits the bull's eye with the measly figure of US$271,985 from 28 screens. The gross is the lowest for a no.1 film in about 20 months. Last weekend, PLANES claimed the apex position with only a marginally higher figure of US$272,025.
PRISONERS, the kidnap thriller starring Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal debut with US$239,067 from 33 screens for the runner-up spot.
Other debuts include Luc Besson's WE'RE A NICE NORMAL FAMILY (US$72,671); Brit comedy THE WORLD'S END (US$42,545) and Peter Chan's AMERICAN DREAMS IN CHINA 中国合伙人 (US$10,927).
Ranked no. 10 on CFEA but missing from Box Office Mojo is the romance comedy, MY LUCKY STAR 非常幸运. Starring Zhang Ziyi and Wang Leehom, the Chinese-American co-production that was shot partly in Singapore probably grossed between US$31,128 and US$39,610 from a probable 9 screens. 1, the documentary about the Formula 1 race is released on a single screen, but box office figures are also not available.
Last week's no. 1 film, PLANES take s a deep nosedive of 76.3%. It adds another US$64,548 to its coffers for a US$879,636 total to date.
Amongst other holdovers, WE'RE THE MILLERS displays an amazing grip but the film is missing from Box Office Mojo although it's ranked 3rd by CFEA. The edited M18 release is gearing up to be one of this year's top comedies and has grossed US$820,293 as of last weekend. It probably grossed somewhere between US$72,671 and US$239,066 this weekend.
Meanwhile, domestic hit ILO ILO 爸妈不在家 spends its 4th straight weekend in the Top 10, adding another US$39,610 for a total of US$574,729 to date. A finish in the range of US$628K-US$643K is likely.
Overall, the top ten films collected US$922,459, making it the worst performing weekend of 2013 (although actual numbers are probably between US$1,044,770 and US$1,211,165, due to the omission of WE'RE THE MILLERS and MY LUCKY STAR).
The official numbers are a 35.9% dip from the last weekend, and a 30.11% dip from the same frame a year ago when RESIDENT EVIL: RETRIBUTION spent a second weekend at no. 1.
Note: There is a discrepancy between Box Office Mojo and CFEA's ranking this week. CFEA ranks PRISONERS as the no. 1 film whereas 2 GUNS is ranked as the top grossing film by Box Office Mojo. I'm going with Box Office Mojo's ranking as it includes actual box office numbers, whereas figures from CFEA are not available.
