SINGAPORE - RUNNER RUNNER with Justin Timberlake, Gemma Arterton and Ben Affleck claim the top spot this past weekend, becoming the first M18-rated movie to hit no. 1 this year. It grosses US$292,053 from 28 screens for a decent US$10,430 screen average. This is the 3rd consecutive weekend that a film managed to snag the no. 1 spot with less than US$300,000 following PLANES and 2 GUNS.
Coming in at no. 2 is Tsui Hark's period fantasy adventure, YOUNG DETECTIVE DEE: RISE OF THE SEA DRAGON 狄仁杰之神都龙王. Rising Taiwanese heart throb Mark Chao replaces Andy Lau in this prequel which grosses US$266,074 from 27 screens for a good US$9,855 screen average. DETECTIVE DEE AND THE MYSTERY OF THE PHANTOM FLAME 狄仁杰之通天帝国 debut with a mightier US$404,768 on 27 screens in 2010 for a US$938,991 finish; while Tsui Hark's last film, FLYING SWORDS OF DRAGON GATE 龙门飞甲 (2011) started with US$392,388 from 30 screens for a US$662,765 total.
YOUNG DETECTIVE DEE is Hark's second 3D outing following SWORDS. But only the 2D version is being screened in Singapore. The pricier format's appeal has been on the wane in recent years and distributors are now more selective over which films gets released in 3D.
One genre in which film distributors have apparently been having success with when it comes to 3D is the concert film. Ticket prices are about twice as high, but this is a price that fans may not baulk at paying. This week, MAYDAY NOWHERE 3D debuts with US$57,012 from 6 screens for a strong US$9,502 average. Their last concert film, MAYDAY 3DNA (2011) started with US$96,600 (also from 6 screens) and finished with US$144,625.
Also making a noteworthy splash is METALLICA: THROUGH THE NEVER IMAX 3D, which picks up US$8,624 total from 2 screens. Just last week, ONE DIRECTION: THIS IS US 3D ended a 4-week run with a healthy US$155,124.
Other debuts include Ron Howard's indie sports drama, RUSH starring Chris Hemsworth (US$203,629, including sneaks); the comedy drama, STUCK IN LOVE (US$34,094); and UK's Oscar Best Foreign Language Film hopeful, METRO MANILA which is the 3rd weakest screen average debut of the year with US$6,238 from 7 screens for a US$891 screen average.
A few films were missing from B.O.M.'s tally last weekend: MY LUCKY STAR 非常幸运 has grossed US$62,991 to date; WE'RE THE MILLERS has grossed US$1,087,925 in its 4th weekend; Malaysian action flick DAMPAK has collected US$23,972 as of its 2nd weekend; while the documentary 1 is still missing.
THAT GIRL IN PINAFORE 我的朋友,我的同学,我爱过的一切 ended its run after 9 weeks - the 2nd longest for a domestic release this year after AH BOYS TO MEN 2 新宾正传 II, which lasted 11 weeks. GIRL has grossed US$434,429 - making it the 4th highest grossing domestic film of the year.
ILO ILO爸妈不在家 - currently the 3rd highest domestic grosser for 2013 has just received a record breaking 6 nominations for the 50th Golden Horse Awards to be handed out on Nov 23. The Camera d'Or winner has grossed US$611,579 to date and a finish in the range of US$632K-US$641K is likely.
Overall, the top ten films grossed US$1,243,261, or a 34.8% increase from last weekend (The actual % increase is probably smaller due to numbers from WE'RE THE MILLERS and MY LUCKY STAR being omitted from last weekend's tally). Business is still slow, as this is the 2nd lowest grossing weekend of 2013 after last weekend. It is however 5.08% higher than the same frame a year ago when PREMIUM RUSH took the no. 1 spot.
