SINGAPORE - GRAVITY, Alfonso Cuaron's space disaster movie starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney lands at no. 1 with US$1,045,014 from 55 screens and an astounding US$19,000 screen average. Throw in sneaks from last weekend and its total stands at US$1,321,669. It's the 15th film to debut above US$1m this year. Ticket sales is likely to have been boosted by IMAX 3D as the film is one of the most highly praised 3D releases since AVATAR. The 3D share of ticket sales is however not available.
Animated sequel CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS 2 (also available in 3D) debuts with US$289,982 from 40 screens for an average US$7,250 screen average. Total to date with one week's worth of sneaks thrown in is US$507,721.
Richard Curtis's romance comedy about love and time travel pulls in US$197,825 from 28 screens, also for an average US$7,065 collection per screen. Its total tally with sneaks is US$235,610. Woody Allen's latest, BLUE JASMINE starts with US$29,931 from 8 screens for a meek US$3,741 screen average.
Other debuts include youth drama RHYTHM OF THE RAIN 听见下雨的声音 (US$17,450/US$3,490 screen average); heist film EMPIRE STATE (US$14,119/US$2,824); Neil Jordan's vampire tale, BYZANTIUM (US$4,839/US$2,420) and Yoji Yamada's TOKYO FAMILY (US$3,230) on a single screen.
Last weekend's top film, INSIDIOUS CHAPTER 2 scares up an additional US$296,021 for a US$983,975 total to date. This is slightly more than three times what the first film grossed in its entire run back in 2011. On its current trajectory, a finish in the range of US$1.5m is likely.
Overall, the weekend saw sales of US$2,095,767 from the top ten films - a 38.2% increase from last weekend and a 23.03% increase from the exact frame a year ago when TAKEN 2 spent its second weekend at no. 1.
