SINGAPORE - Horror sequel INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 2 is the top film this past weekend with US$512,207 from 31 screens for a frightfully healthy US$16,352 screen average. This is already more than the US$312,757 total gross of the original film from 2011. A finish in the range of US$1.24-US$1.44m is likely, which means that James Wan, who also directed THE CONJURING, may end up helming the top 2 horror films of 2013. Sony handled the distribution this time round, while Golden Village Pictures distributed the original film.
Other debuts include Hong Kong disaster flick OUT OF INFERNO 逃出生天 (including a single 3D screen; US$144,265); Malaysian action drama KL GANGSTER 2 (US$30,684); Survivor thriller THE COLONY (US$27,714); Korean viral disaster movie THE FLU (US$18,359): and the single print release, UNIVERSAL SOLDIER: DAY OF RECKONING (US$1,673).
Overall, the top ten films grossed US$1,516,725, a 22% increase from the previous weekend but a 24.38% dip from the same frame a year ago when TAKEN 2 debut at the top of the box office.
