Singapore - Half of the new movies this week are also the first edited films to be released this year.
Taiwanese horror THE TAG-ALONG 红衣小女孩 (NC16 Edited) has been released with a lower rating in lieu of an uncut version with a more restrictive rating.
Oscar contender THE BIG SHORT (NC16 Edited) is likely to have been edited to comply with a ruling that states that "language that denigrates religion or is religiously profane is not allowed for all ratings." However, this is not mentioned in the classification information for the film (the film classification database used to identify "language that denigrates religion", but this no longer appears to be the case).
It is not known if Japanese drama NO LONGER HEROINE (PG13 Edited) could have been released uncut if a more restrictive rating was applied.
The movies released without edits are SPOTLIGHT (NC16), THE HATEFUL EIGHT (R21) and MR. SIX 老炮儿 (M18).
Last year, a total of 11 films were released with edits, while another 14 were released with edits in lieu of uncut versions with higher ratings. One film was released with dual ratings simultaneously while the uncut version of an edited film was released later (These numbers include only theatrical releases from Disney, Fox, Sony, UIP, WB, Cathay, Golden Village and Shaw).
UPDATE (15 Feb): The Film Classification Database now identifies the offending language pertaining to THE BIG SHORT.
