SINGAPORE - Will Smith and son conquer the box office with AFTER EARTH while crime thriller NOW YOU SEE ME debuts in the runner-up spot. Only a mere US$19,290 separate the two titles, making this the tightest race for the top spot this year.
AFTER EARTH opens on 55 screens for a US$847,858 total; while NOW YOU SEE ME which opens on 30 screens grossed US$828,568 for a sizzling US$27,619 screen average - the 5th highest of the year to date behind IRON MAN 3 (US$37,995), FAST & FURIOUS 6 (US$35,363), G.I. JOE: RETALIATION (US$30,241) and AH BOYS TO MEN 2 新兵正传 II (US$28,132).
Both AFTER EARTH and NOW YOU SEE ME may end their runs in the region of US$1.7m each; although NOW YOU SEE ME may reach as high as US$1.9m if it holds up well in the coming weeks.
The Danish thriller THE HUNT opens with US$6,977, which is a pretty decent start for a single print release. Only three other single print releases open higher this year: MONSTERS, INC 3D (US$10,094), QUARTET (US$8,167) and MACHI ACTION 变身 (US$7,071).
Other debuts include the thriller PENTHOUSE NORTH (US$22,352); Vicky Zhao 赵薇's directorial debut SO YOUNG 致我们终将逝去的青春 (US$15,323) and the animated adventure ESCAPE FROM PLANET EARTH, which makes one of the worst debuts of the year with US$5,567 and a disastrous screen average of US$696. Only the romance 10 YEARS had a worst opening screen average of US$395. A debut missing from Box Office Mojo's list is the Taiwanese apocalyptic gore feast ZOMBIE 108 弃城.
The former 2-week no. 1 reigning champion, FAST & FURIOUS 6 dips 66.5% in its third week. The blockbuster has grossed US$4,503,844 to date and is now the 3rd biggest grosser of the year to date behind IRON MAN 3 (US$10.1m) and AH BOYS TO MEN 2 新兵正传 II (US$6.3m). A final booty around US$4.7-US$4.9m is a likelihood.
THE HANGOVER PART III finished its second weekend with US$1,443,036; and may end its run as the top film in the trilogy with US$1.9-US$2.1m in its bank account.
Thai horror PEE MAK walks away with US$52,168 from 15 screens of sneak previews and opens the following week.
Overall, the top ten films grossed US$2,828,825, up 1.9% from the previous week, but down 10.69% from the same frame a year ago when MADAGASCAR 3: EUROPE'S MOST WANTED opened at no. 1.
