SINGAPORE - WAR WORLD Z and MONSTERS UNIVERSITY lead the box office and become the 10th and 11th films to cross the US$1m mark in their debut weekends. This is the only instance this year where a pair of debut films achieve this feat concurrently. Both films are also released with 3D options though the days when the number of 3D prints outnumber the 2D version is over.
WORLD WAR Z's tally now stands at US$1,558,091 while MONSTERS UNIVERSITY has grossed US$1,113,200. Last week's top film MAN OF STEEL, which has banked US$4,245,605 to date drops to third place at the box office.
Meanwhile, crime caper NOW YOU SEE ME has tricked its way to US$2,066,990 - far outpacing AFTER EARTH, which has made US$1,378,482 to date. Both films debut the same time three weeks ago with EARTH stealing the crown from NOW by a narrow margin.
The Korean comedy MIRACLE IN CELL NO. 7 debuts outside the top ten on two screens with a collection of US$7,740.
Overall, WORLD WAR Z and MONSTERS UNIVERSITY led the weekend top ten to gross a mighty US$3,939,492 - up 6.2% from the last weekend to become the second highest grossing weekend of 2013 to date. It's also up 139.29% over the same frame a year ago when MADAGASCAR 3: EUROPE'S MOST WANTED spent its third and final week at no. 1.
