LIFE OF PI maintains grip at no. 1

10 Dec 2012

SINGAPORE - Even as it's reported that LIFE OF PI's box office tally in China has now overshadowed its US gross, the film maintains a second week at no. 1 in Singapore. The film drops a slim 29.9% and collects a total of US$763,555. Its screen average of US$11,931 is also the highest of the week. Total gross for PI now stands at US$2,200,737.

Debuting at second place is the animated flick HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA. The film scores a total of US$500,698 and a screen average of US$11,644 from 43 screens. Two week ago, RISE OF THE GUARDIANS started with a marginally higher US$645,942 and screen average of US$12,919 from 50 screens. GUARDIANS has already amassed US$1,764,186 (higher than what I predicted two weeks ago). Disney's WRECK-IT RALPH in two weeks, which would make it a very crowded place for animated films.

THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN - PART 2 drops by 64%. This is marginally better than the 66.4% drop suffered by PART 1 in the film's third week of release. BREAKING DAWN - PART 2 collects another US$204,190, which pushes its total tally to US$2,983,798. The film is on track to cross U$3m, and is already the highest grossing film in the very lucrative franchise.

New at no. 5 is the 3D horror SILENT HILL: REVELATION with US$183,285 and a decent screen average of US$9,164 from 20 screens. Faring rather decently also is the Thai horror anthology 3AM at no. 7, which grossed US$77,751 from 11 screens for a average of US$7,068.

Domestic hit AH BOYS TO MEN (新兵正传) collects another US$173,253 to push its total to US$4,800,248 (S$5,859,374). Still playing on 20 screens, its screen average of US$8,663 is the kind of result most films would be envious of in their fifth week of release. BOYS is now on track to beat the 14 year-old box office record held by MONEY NO ENOUGH (钱不够用) (S$6.02m).

BACK TO 1942 (一九十二) may be a hit in China but the historical disaster drama opens with a lukewarm US$53,898 and screen average of US$4,900 from 11 screens at no. 8.

Debuting outside the top 10 is Taiwan teen romance, WHEN A WOLF FALLS IN LOVE WITH A SHEEP (南方小羊牧场), which stars Kai Ko from YOU ARE THE APPLE OF MY EYE (那些年,我们一起追的女孩). The film bombs on arrival despite a promotional campaign that includes flying both leads into town to promote the film. WOLF opens with US$37,597 and a miserable US$2,506 screen average from 15 screens.

Films that debut but were unranked include the Japanese dog drama, GO MASAO! The single print release opened outside CFEA's top 10.

Screening with limited sessions but at premium prices is the concert film SM TOWN LIVE IN TOKYO SPECIAL EDITION 3D. In the middle of this year, I AM: SM TOWN LIVE WORLD TOUR IN MADISON SQUARE GARDEN grossed US$90,655 from 5 screens during its opening weekend for a high US$18,131 screen average (reflecting the higher ticket prices). The film eventually grossed US$189,802. Box office figures for SM TOWN LIVE IN TOKYO are unavailable, but its box office performance is likely to be similar.

Also opening but is unranked is the Hindi action comedy KHILADI 786.

This past weekend's top ten total reached US$2,256,540, which is 62.11% higher than the same frame a year ago when NEW YEAR'S EVE was the top film and the total top ten box office was US$1,391951.
