STAR TREK Plunges #1 INTO DARKNESS

20 May 2013

SINGAPORE - STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS debuts at no. 1 with US$1,377,918 (including 3D, IMAX 3D and sneak previews over the last weekend) on 86 screens, easily toppling IRON MAN 3 which had spent the last 3 weeks as the top choice amongst filmgoers.

INTO DARKNESS has already outperformed STAR TREK (2009), which grossed US$1,195,561. J.J. Abrams' second Enterprise outing looks set to finish with around US$2.4m - more than twice what the previous film grossed.

IRON MAN 3, which sits comfortably in the runner-up spot added another US$443,047 for a US$9,759,139 tally. The Marvel Studios pic has been holding up rather well with a screen average that has yet to dip below US$10,000. The top grosser for 2013 has now jumped ahead of AVATAR to become the second highest grosser of all time behind THE AVENGERS (2012) (US$11,172,253). A final tally in the range of US$10m is a very possible scenario.

THE GREAT GATSBY debuts at no. 3 with US$406,463 from 31 screens, including some in 3D for the highest screen average of the week (US$13,112) . The Leonardo DiCaprio drama by Baz Luhrmann may conclude its run with around US$1m.

Other debuts include the M18 edited version of the Korean romance comedy MY PHONE SEX PARTNER, which grossed US$20,268 from 3 screens for a rather decent US$6,756 screen average. Hong Kong thriller THE INCREDIBLE TRUTH 溫泉 scores the lowest screen average amongst newcomers with US$2,144 across 8 screens for a US$17,153 total. The Korean mystery drama GUILTY OF ROMANCE debuts with US$12,670 on 4 screens for a not so good US$3,168 screen average. Also new is POPULAIRE - the French romance comedy which is released on a single screen for a US$4,453 total.

The top ten films grossed US$2,033,917, which is a 20.3% increase from the week before and a 4.71% dip from the same frame a year ago when THE AVENGERS was no. 1 for a third week.
