GRAVITY is not letting go of no. 1

21 Oct 2013

SINGAPORE - GRAVITY is not letting go of the no. 1 spot as it becomes the 20th film to cross the US$2m mark this year. Its total tally is now US$2,452,687. A finish in the range of US$3.01-US$3.03m is in sight.

SPECIAL ID 特殊身份, the mixed martial arts action flick starring Donnie Yen is the top new film with US$489,795 from 30 screens for a fantastic US$16,327 screen average. That's the fifth biggest debut for a Mandarin language film this year behind AH BOYS TO MEN 2 新兵正传 II (US$1,237,801), SAVING GENERAL YANG 忠烈杨家将 (US$545,158), JOURNEY TO THE WEST: CONQUERING THE DEMONS 西游.降魔篇 (US$509,337) and TAXI! TAXI! 德士当家 (US$492,010). It may collect US$1m by the end of its run.

Taiwanese food comedy ZONE PRO SITE: THE MOVEABLE FEAST 总铺师 failed to attract a sizeable turnout as it starts off with a disappointing US$37,782 from 18 screens for a weak US$2,099 screen average. Look for a finish around US$68K.

PLUSH, a thriller from the director of TWILIGHT has the year's worst debut for a title with a commercial run with just US$1,600. It beats the US$1,673 low set by UNIVERSAL SOLDIER: DAY OF RECKONING from just two weekends ago. ALL STARS grossed US$217 last month, but that family film had only one screening. PLUSH also has the third lowest screen average debut of the year with just US$800 from 2 screens. Only 10 YEARS (US$395) and ESCAPE FROM PLANET EARTH (US$696) fared worst. PLUSH is likely to gross around US$2.6K, which will make it the lowest grossing film for 2013.

Other debuts include Thai horror THE SECOND SIGHT (US$54,843); Robert Rodriguez's MACHETE KILLS (US$36,871); Japanese drama OSHIN (US$29,120); Japanese anime GINTAMA: THE FINAL MOVIE (US$22,480): the edited R21-rated version of LOVELACE (US$19,448) and sci-fi GATCHAMAN based on the popular Japanese anime series from the 80s (figures not available as the film is not listed on Box Office Mojo). Aspiring Oscar contender, THE BUTLER sneaks on 10 screens for a US$13,749 total.

Amongst other holdovers, the time travelling romantic comedy ABOUT TIME dips a scant 6.5% in its second weekend for a final tally of US$571,124 to date. It's the 5th lowest dip for a second weekend title this year, and only one of 8 films that declined by less than 10%. The other films that had incredible holds for their second weekend are: AMOUR (-2.0%); OLYMPUS HAS FALLEN (-2.2%); AH BOYS TO MEN 2 新宾正传 II (-4.6%); THE RELUCTANT FUNDAMENTALIST (-5.8%); ILO ILO 爸妈不在家 (-9.3%); QUARTET (-9.6%) and PRINCESS AND 7 KUNGFU MASTERS 笑功震武林 (-9.9%). On its current trajectory, ABOUT TIME could end its run with around US$768K.

Meanwhile, INSIDIOUS CHAPTER 2 becomes the 38th title to cross US$1m this year. James Wan has now directed the top two pure horror titles of 2013 with his earlier film THE CONJURING having grossed US$2,160,129. INSIDIOUS CHAPTER 2 has grossed US$1,286,911 and may finish in the range of US$1.3m-S$1.6m, far outperforming the original which grossed US$312,757 back in 2011.

Overall, the top ten films grossed US$1,684,914, which is a 19.6% dip from the last weekend, but a 39.38% increase from the same frame a year ago when kidnap thriller TAKEN 2 spent its 3rd weekend at no. 1.
