ZOOTOPIA beats EGYPT to no. 1

by Lau Chee Nien / 29 Feb 2016

Singapore - Disney's ZOOTOPIA (PG) beats GODS OF EGYPT (PG13) to no. 1, grossing US$704,725 from 44 screens for a strong US$16,016 per screen average while the Gerard Butler mythological epic is just slightly behind with US$583,036 from 37 screens for a mighty US$15,758 average. Both films are also playing on IMAX 3D, with the animated hit also screening with limited 3D options.

Former box office champ DEADPOOL (M18) drops to third place, while holdovers MERMAID 美人鱼 (PG) and HOW TO BE SINGLE (NC16) round up the top five.

Also new is Eric Khoo's international version of IN THE ROOM (R21), which also happens to be the third local release of the year. The erotic drama debuts outside the top ten with a decent-but-nothing-to-shout-about gross of US$21,208 from 5 screens.

Other debuts include THE OTHER SIDE OF THE DOOR (PG13), RIDE ALONG 2 (PG13), THE GIGOLO 2 鸭王 2 (R21) and TRUMBO (PG13).

Opening exclusively at the Projector is newly crowned Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language Film SON OF SAUL (M18).

Concert film IMAGINE DRAGONS - SMOKE + MIRRORS LIVE (PG) plays exclusively at GVmax for one show only on 2 Mar.

Amongst holdovers, MERMAID 美人鱼 has overtaken LONG LONG TIME AGO 我们的故事 to become the top grossing Lunar New Year release of 2016. Their cumulative grosses stand at US$2,802,077 and US$2,563,268 respectively.

Meanwhile, DEADPOOL, a.k.a. the highest grossing film of the year to date has now made US$4,088,692.
