Singapore - Eternals debuts at no. 1 with US$1,359,272, becoming the highest grossing debut for a M18 rated film this year and possibly during the pandemic era.
In comparison, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings started with US$1,597,685 in September. Earlier in March, Godzilla vs. Kong opened with an estimated US$1.62m (S$2.19m). Shang-Chi and GVK are both rated PG13 and opened on a Wednesday, while Eternals sneaked on a Wednesday before its full release on Thursday.
The box office debuts for The Suicide Squad and Mortal Kombat, two high profile M18-rated wide releases earlier this year were not reported on any box office sites such as Box Office Mojo and The Numbers.
M18-rated titles that opened big during pre-pandemic times included Deadpool 2 (US$1,850,668), Deadpool (US$1,839,537) and Logan (US$1,552,459).
Rock Dog 2: Rock Around the Park is the other debut in the top ten at no. 10.
