Singapore - Marvel's ANT-MAN (PG) debuts at the top of the box office with an astounding US$2,013,433 from 101 screens. Premium sessions include 3D and IMAX 3D. That's mightier than last year's GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY, which kicked off with US$1,785,046, and 2011's CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER (US$1,691,249), but close to THE WOLVERINE which had first weekend sales of US$2,036,815 two year back.
ANT-MAN is also the 3rd highest July debut of all-time behind HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS: PART 2 (US$3,020,290/S$3,681,280) and THE DARK KNIGHT RISES (US$2,650,244/S$3,327,514) in domestic dollars (S$2,756,027).
Positions two through six are all holdovers as the next highest debut comes in at no. 7: Cathay 80th anniversary pic, OUR SISTER MAMBO (PG). The only other debut in the top ten is family drama MAX (US$38,346/7 screens).
Other new films include Abel Ferrara's WELCOME TO NEW YORK (R21 Edited) (US$6,535/2 screens); Derek Yee's I AM SOMEBODY 我是路人甲 (PG) and documentary FOODIES (PG13).
New Indian releases included Hindi drama BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN (PG13) and Tamil Action flick MAARI (PG13).
