THE EXPENDABLES 2 debuts on top!

SINGAPORE - THE EXPENDABLES 2 blows away the competition as it scores the highest screen average for a NC16 film in 2012 and the third highest overall. Its debut screen average of US$25,847 is behind only SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN (US$28,132) and THE AVENGERS (US$27,756) while staying ahead of THE DARK KNIGHT RISES (US$24,093), MADAGASCAR 3 (US$21,548) and THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (US$20,624). Its result is even more impressive considering the release on 38 prints grossed a total of US$982,183, and is now on track to overtake its predecessor which grossed US$1.37m in 2010.

GREEDY GHOST (贪心鬼见鬼), the sixth local release of 2012 probably grossed between US$152K to US$390K from a probable 18 prints. It was ranked no. 4 in the CFEA Top 10 published in Straits Times Life! but was missing from Box Office Mojo this week.

Also missing (and a surprising omission) - ROCK OF AGES is ranked no. 6 and probably made between US$77K and US$152K from a probable 19 screens.

Meanwhile, the final debut - THE SILENT WAR (听风者) starring Tony Leung and Zhou Xun grossed a miserable US$59K from 13 prints.

Both GHOST and WAR highlight the fact that most Mandarin films have not fared well at the local box office of late. The last Tony Leung film, THE GREAT MAGICIAN (大魔术师) grossed only US$305k earlier this year. Only 5 Mandarin films have made the Top 50 for 2012 (to date), with only 2 having crosssed US$1m - WE NOT NAUGHTY (孩子不坏) and DANCE DANCE DRAGON (龙众舞). THE VIRAL FACTOR (逆戰) is the only other film having crossed US$500K, while the next two highest grossers PAINTED SKIN: THE RESURRECTION (画皮II) and THE FOUR (四大名捕) only grossed US$470K and US$424K respectively. All other Mandarin releases have grossed below US$400K.
