BREAKING DAWN - PART 2 debuts with US$1.5m!

26 Nov 2012

SINGAPORE - THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN - PART 2 becomes the 16th film this year to debut above US$1m, with a tally of US$1,533,449. It claims the no. 1 spot on the exact same weekend as PART 1 did last year. With higher ticket prices, more screens (62 vs. 46), and PART 2 being sold as the epic conclusion to a blockbuster franchise, PART 2 starts off 40.86% stronger than PART 1. Its screen average of US$24,733 is also slightly higher than PART 1's US$23,667. PART 1 ended its run with US$2,181,325 and PART 2 looks like it's on track to gross above US$3m, which would also make it the highest grossing film in the franchise.

UIP offers the original animated feature RISE OF THE GUARDIANS, which lands in the runner-up spot with US$645,942 from 50 screens and a screen average of US$12,919. Last year, UIP released PUSS IN BOOTS which also claimed the runner up spot on the exact same weekend. PUSS grossed a higher US$809,038 from 58 screens and a slightly higher screen average of US$13,949. However, considering that GUARDIANS is not a sequel nor based on an existing franchise, the results are probably within expectations. The highest grossing non-sequel animated flick so far this year is Pixar's BRAVE, which started with US$832,210 on 53 screens for a US$2,293,407 finish. If GUARDIANS follows the same trajectory, it may finish with around US$1.4m, which will be significantly lower than the US$2,300,589 finish for PUSS IN BOOTS.

The only other debut is the remake of RED DAWN, which starts with US$26,466 on 7 screens and a so-so average of US$3,781.

Amongst holdovers, local movie AH BOYS TO MEN (新兵正传)'s gross now stands at US$3,993,619 (S$4,881,999). The film is now the 8th highest grossing film of 2012 and the 2nd highest grossing domestic film of all time . BOYS is now aiming to topple the 14-year old record of S$6.02m set by MONEY NO ENOUGH (钱不够用) from 1998.

Meanwhile, COLD WAR (寒战) has amassed US$604,446 after just 2 weeks of screening and is on track to become the top Hong Kong film playing in Singapore this year. It's already the 5th highest grossing Mandarin film behind AH BOYS TO MEN (US$3,993,619), WE NOT NAUGHTY (小孩不坏) (US$1,716,933), DANCE DANCE DRAGON (龙众舞) (US$1,143,877) and fellow Hong Kong pic THE VIRAL FACTOR (逆战) (US$778,242).

The total top ten box office this weekend is US$3,328,681, which is a 10.63% improvement over the same period from a year ago.
