14 Jan 2013

SINGAPORE - GANGSTER SQUAD takes over the top spot with US$362,354 from 24 screens for a strong screen average of US$15,098.

Other debuts include the rebooted YOUNG AND DANGEROUS: RELOADED (古惑仔:江湖新秩序) (US$127,491), the drama comedy SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK (US$118,189), the crime comedy SEVEN PSYCHOPATHS (US$37,944) and the Miley Cyrus headlined teen flick, SO UNDERCOVER (U$33,859). These films had screen averages in the range of US$6,324 to US$7,968.

DEADFALL and RUST AND BONE may have been critically acclaimed but failed to find their audiences. DEADFALL grossed US$26,388 from 11 screens for a miserable US2,339 screen average while RUST AND BONE bombed on arrival with US$7,701 from 3 screens for a screen average of US$2,567.

Starting out strong is the premium-priced CIRQUE DU SOLEIL: WORLDS AWAY. The 3D presentation grossed US$22,012 from 2 screens and premium prices for a strong US$11,006 per screen.

Meanwhile, three holdovers continue to display strengths. LES MISERABLES slips a slim 26.7% in its third week and pushes its cum to US$1,897,640. Domestic hit TAXI! TAXI! (德士当家)continues to attract audiences by scoring the second highest screen average of the week and has now collected US$870,768. A final tally above US$1m is very likely. Meanwhile, CZ12 (十二生肖) is now the highest grossing non-domestic Mandarin film in Singapore, beating the previous record holder IP MAN 2 (叶问2: 宗师传奇). The film has taken US$3,962,865 to date.

Box office results for Japanese fantasy romance, AKKO CHAN - THE MOVIE, which is released by Encore Films exclusively on 2 Filmgarde screens is unavailable.

The top ten films grossed US$1,670,470, which is a 81.54% improvement from the same weekend a year ago when the crime drama CONTRABAND ruled the number 1 spot.
