PERCY JACKSON Keeps PLANES from Landing at No. 1!

9 Sep 2013

SINGAPORE - PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS holds on to no. 1 for a second weekend, adding another US$529,938 for a US$1,628,354 total to date. The hit pic looks likely to finish with around US$2.1m, which would put it on par with PERCY JACKSON & THE OLYMPIANS: THE LIGHTNING THIEF which grossed US$2,101,203 back in 2010.

Landing in the runner-up runway is Disney's PLANES (including some screenings in 3D). The latest animated flick grossed US$389,179 from 38 screens. The edited M18 rated version of WE'RE THE MILLERS follows close behind with a no. 3 debut. US$449,437 has been collected to date, including last weekend's sneak previews.

Other debuts include Japanese anime DETECTIVE CONAN: PRIVATE EYE IN THE DISTANT SEA (US$58,837); Korean thriller COLD EYES (US$34,314); Hong Kong comedy THE MIDAS TOUCH 超级经理人 (US$14,574) and the family sci-fi adventure CODY THE ROBOSAPIEN (US$10,886). RIDDICK, the Vin Diesel sic-fi action sequel sneaks on 12 screens and grosses US$38,667.

VIOLET & DAISY, which opened last week but was unlisted, has grossed US$8,272 as of this second weekend. Two special limited screenings also make appearances on the chart: The 3D ballet film TCHAIKOVSKY'S SWAN LAKE (US$6,332) and the youth musical ALL STARS (US$217).

Amongst holdovers, ILO ILO 爸妈不在家, the 11th domestic release of the year dips a tiny 9.3% to amass a US$382,362 total to date. It's now likely to end its run in the range of US$513K to US$884K. This would make it the 3rd highest grossing domestic film of the year behind AH BOYS TO MEN 2 (新宾正传 II) (US$6,366,469) and TAXI! TAXI! (德士当家) (US$1,168,419) - a feat that it may just achieve by next weekend if it sticks to its current trajectory.

Meanwhile, THAT GIRL IN PINAFORE (我的朋友,我的同学,我爱过的一切), another domestic release enters its 6th weekend and grosses another US$11,633 for a US$419,828 total to date. Chances are the film will inch past GHOST CHILD (鬼仔) (US$422,147), currently the 3rd highest grossing domestic film of the year by next weekend.

Overall, the weekend which kicks off a one week school holiday grossed US$1,972,755 from the top ten - a 4.7% dip from the previous weekend and a 0.05% increase over the same frame a year ago when the foul mouth adult comedy TED sat on the no. 1 spot.
