PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS debuts at No. 1!

2 Sep 2013

SINGAPORE - PERCY JACKON: SEA OF MONSTERS grabs hold of the no. 1 spot with US$911,157 from 49 screens (including sneaks) for a mighty US$18,502 screen average. The Olympian sequel is pretty much on par with PERCY JACKSON & THE OLYMPIANS: THE LIGHTNING THIEF which started with a similar US$18,392 screen average 3 years ago. That film ended up holding onto the top spot for 3 weekends, and grossed US$2,101,203 by the end of its run. SEA OF MONSTERS, which starts with 14 more screens (including 3D) looks likely to make as much as US$2.9m.

The 11th domestic film of the year and the nation's first Cannes award winning film, ILO ILO 爸妈不在家 opens on 15 screens for a US$187,530 total (including sneaks). It scores the third highest screen average of the weekend with US$10,587.

For comparison's sake, TAXI! TAXI! 德士当家 started with US$492,010 from 21 screens and a US$17,784 screen average earlier this year, while GHOST CHILD 鬼仔 debut with US$179,396 from 23 screens for a weaker US$7,800 screen average. THAT GIRL IN PINAFORE 我的朋友,我的同学,我爱过的一切 had grossed US$219,076 after two weekends while JUDGMENT DAY 世界末日's takings after two weekends was US$212,430.

Final grosses for this year's top domestic films are: AH BOYS TO MEN 2 新宾正传 II (US$6,366,469); TAXI! TAXI! (US$1,168,419); GHOST CHILD (US$422,147); THAT GIRL IN PINAFORE (US$399,388 and counting) and JUDGMENT DAY (US$246,782). On its current trajectory, ILO ILO looks set to become the third highest grossing domestic film of the year with final takings in the range of US$450K.

Blasting in with the second highest screen average is the concert film ONE DIRECTION: THIS IS US 3D. Its US$11,429 screen average and US$68,574 total from 6 screens is a surprisingly strong, considering the weak reception given to 2012's KATY PERRY: PART OF ME (US$46,144 debut / 28 screens / US$1,135 screen average) and 2011's JUSTIN BIEBER: NEVER SAY NEVER (US$143,532 debut / 38 screens / US$2,925 screen average). A final tally in the range of US$129K may result.

Other debuts include the sci-fi thriller THE PURGE (US$162,093); Thai horror LAST SUMMER (US$20,518) and the single print release FRUITVALE STATION (US$2,730). The thriller about two teenage assassins VIOLET & DAISY opens on 2 Cathay screens and is unranked. The edited M18 version of WE'RE THE MILLERS sneaked over the weekend. Figures are also not available.

Overall, the top ten films grossed US$2,070,512 over the weekend, a 9.9% increase from the weekend before and a 18.97% increase over the same frame from a year ago when STEP UP: REVOLUTION became the no. 1 film of the weekend.
