X-MEN is no.1 as total box office sales crosses US$4m!

26 May 2014

SINGAPORE - X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST grabs hold of the no. 1 spot with US$3,203,248 from 116 screens over the weekend, including 3D for a US$27,614 screen average - the highest to date this year. Throw in Wednesday's sneak previews and the total tally amounts to US$3,377,922. That's enough for the new X-Men flick to become the third highest grossing film of the year to date behind THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 (US$7,008,048) and CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER (US$6,012,468).

The Bryan Singer mutant flick is also the second biggest debut of the year behind THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, which started with US$3,774,303 (including sneaks). Back in 2011, X-MEN: FIRST CLASS opened on 40% less screens but scored an impressive US$24,638 screen average for a US$1,724,673 opening total.

Other debuts include the biopic GRACE OF MONACO starring Nicole Kidman (US$17,358 / 9 screens); Pang Ho-cheung's latest, ABERDEEN 香港仔 (US$10,979 / 4 screens); the edited R21 rated thriller THE CANYONS starring Lindsay Lohan (US$2,223 / 2 screens); and Japanese thriller DUSK (figures unavailable).

ABERDEEN's US$10,979 debut is within range of Pang Ho-cheung's other releases, including  LOVE IN THE BUFF 春娇与志明 (2012) (US$17,693 debut, 8 screens, US$28,806 total); LOVE IN A PUFF 志明与春娇 (2010) (US$12,944 debut, 7 screens, US$18,156 total); and VULGARIA 低俗喜剧 (debut figures unavailable, 3 screens, US$52,747 total).

Overall, the weekend gross from the top ten films came up to US$4,019,685 - a 39.4% increase from last weekend and a 14.49% increase from the same frame a year ago when FAST & FURIOUS 6 raced into the top spot.

This weekend's haul is only the fourth time in history the US$4m mark has been crossed. During the Lunar New Year weekend earlier this year, US$4,139,224 was collected with ROBOCOP as the no. 1 film. The other two times it happened was in 2011 when X-MEN: FIRST CLASS led a box office totalling US$4,236,701; and in 2013 when IRON MAN 3 was the top film during a weekend that grossed US$4,090,461.
