EDGE puts Cruise back at no. 1

SINGAPORE - Tom Cruise's new sci-fi flick EDGE OF TOMORROW becomes the 9th film to debut above US$1m this year. It tops the box office with US$1,032,445 from 62 screens (including 3D and IMAX 3D) and a US$16,652 screen average. Throw in last weekend's sneak previews and the total comes up to US$1,236,033.

Last April, Tom Cruise's other sci-fi flick, OBLIVION opened with US$1,152,146 from 52 screens (including IMAX but no 3D) for a stronger US$22,157 screen average.

Other new films include the comedy BLENDED with Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore (US$228,738 / 29 screens); Jon Favreau's food comedy CHEF starring Robert Downey, Jr. (US$26,124 / 5 screens); sports drama DRAFT DAY starring Kevin Costner (US$19,703 / 7 screens); action thriller IN THE BLOOD starring Gina Carano (US$9,909 / 3 screens); and sex comedy NAKED AMBITION 3D 豪情 starring Chapman To (figures unavailable, less than US$16,040 / 5 screens in 2D; 1 screen in 3D).

Two films sneaked over the weekend - HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON 2 (in 2D and 3D) and THE FAULT IN OUR STARS with collections of US$324,063 (53 screens) and US$61,372 (18 screens) respectively. Last weekend, EDGE OF TOMORROW sneaked and grossed US$203,588 from 52 screens, indicating that DRAGON 2 may become the 10th film this year to debut above US$1m next week.

Meanwhile, X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST picks up another US$604,099 for a US$6,818,600 total to date. It's now the 2nd highest grossing film of 2014 and the 8th highest grossing film of all time.

In comparison, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2, this year's top film to date grossed US$6,806,819 by the end of its 3rd weekend; and has grossed US$7,102,608 to date. It's currently the 7th highest grossing film of all time.

Overall, the Top 10 films grossed US$3,168,281, a 9.5% dip from last weekend; but a 12% increase from the same frame a year ago when AFTER EARTH debut at no. 1.
