Singapore - DRACULA UNTOLD and ANNABELLE push the Hari Raya Haji weekend to become the second highest grossing October weekend ever. DRACULA UNTOLD also becomes the 18th film to debut above US$1m this year, while both debuts score screen averages above US$20K. ANNABELLE is the highest screen average earner of the weekend and the 8th highest for 2014.
Launching on 52 screens (including IMAX), the reimagined origin of the infamous vampire lord from Universal Pictures and Legendary Pictures grossed US$1,050,924 for a scorching US$20,210 screen average.
ANNABELLE, the demonic doll gets her own movie in THE CONJURING prequel which opens with US$889,924 from 38 screens for a monstrous US$23,419 screen average. It's one of three films this year to score screen averages above US$20K without hitting no. 1.
ANNABELLE's debut gross is pretty much on par with THE CONJURING, which started with US$717,166 (excluding sneaks) on 31 screens with a red hot US$23,134 screen average in August last year. It also performed stronger than INSIDOUS CHAPTER 2, another horror brand which debut the same weekend a year ago with US$506,916 (excluding sneaks) from 31 screens for a US$16,352 screen average.
The faith based apocalyptic thriller LEFT BEHIND starring Nicolas Cage debuts with US$101,585 from 13 screens for a rather decent US$7,814 screen average.
Other debuts include the family film DOLPHIN TALE 2 (US$89,621 / 21 screens) and the English language version of the French fantasy romance BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (figures unavailable / 7 screens).
Overall, the Top 10 films grossed US$2,687,634, which is a 85.6% increase from the last weekend and a 77.2% increase from the same frame a year ago when INSIDIOUS CHAPTER 2 opened at no. 1.
This October weekend is the second highest grossing ever, behind the final October weekend of 2013 when THOR: THE DARK WORLD led the Top 10 films to a final tally of US$3,480,944.
