Singapore - TERMINATOR GENISYS is the widest debut this weekend but its claim to no. 1 will face a strong challenge from reigning champion MINIONS.
Last weekend, the animated family pic grossed an estimated U$2.24m in its first 4-days. It may fall 40-50% this weekend, which means a further gross of US$1.12m-US$1.34m. (DESPICABLE ME 2 dropped 43.1% in its second weekend)
Based on comparisons with other major Hollywood releases from a year ago, GENISYS could kick off somewhere between US$1m-US$1.4m. Both films have about the same number of sessions, but I'll bet on the Minions' current popularity to give them the slim lead they need to stay one step ahead of John Connor and company.
Below is my prediction of this coming weekend's top ten films, based on the estimated number of sessions on Friday.

MINIONS and JURASSIC WORLD grossed a combined US$3.96m !
23 Jun 2015
Singapore - In the battle of the Titans, MINIONS emerged as the champion of the box office, beating JURASSIC WORLD which debut last week with US$3.64m over its first 4-days (excluding sneaks).
Going into the weekend, it looked like MINIONS would be crushed by the Indominus Rex pic, which scored the 3rd biggest opening weekend of all-time. A probable 50% slide would have translated to a gross of at least US$1.82m this weekend.
The last time the Minions appeared in DESPICABLE ME 2, they kicked off with US$1.84m over its first 4-days. But they do not have the benefit of IMAX 3D screens this time. The only way the cute evil sidekicks wannabes were going to win the box office race was if they performed spectacularly. And this they did with US$2,239,140 from 82 screens (including 3D) for a scorching US$27,307 screen average. Throw in sneaks and the total cume stands at US$2,501,568.

MINIONS will be top debut this weekend
19 Jun 2015
Singapore - MINIONS (PG) is poised to become the top debut this weekend and will try to dethrone last week's box office champion JURASSIC WORLD.
JURASSIC WORLD collected US$3.64m during its first 4 days (excluding sneaks), which means it may still gross US$1.82m even if it dips by half. Recent blockbuster AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON dropped a slim 26.7% in its second weekend while FAST & FURIOUS 7 plunged by 51.5%.
The beloved MINIONS spun out from the hit animated film DESPICABLE ME 2, which took US$1.84m in its first 4 days (excluding sneaks). However, MINIONS will not have the additional benefit of IMAX 3D this time as those premium screens still belong to JURASSIC WORLD.
