RETRIBUTION holds on to No.1 while TO ROME WITH LOVE scores highest screen average

24 Sep 2012

SINGAPORE - Most of the new films make respectable debuts but fail to dislodge RESIDENT EVIL: RETRIBUTION from the throne.

For the fifth straight week, the total box office gross is down compared to a year ago. The F1 Singapore weekend is also the fourth lowest weekend gross of 2012 to date.

THE POSSESSION is the highest debut, grossing US$209,039 from 24 screens while Woody Allen's TO ROME WITH LOVE scores the highest screen average not just amongst new films but overall (US$9,043 from 7 screens for a total of US$63,301).

Also making respectable debuts are DREDD with US$145,722 from 18 screens and SAVAGES with US$72,386 from 12 screens. The results are remarkable as DREDD carries a M18 rating while SAVAGES is rated R21.

The critically acclaimed RUBY SPARKS however fail to catch on with audiences as it grossed US$37,549 from 12 screens for a screen average of US$3,129.

The tenth local release of the year, MY DOG DOU DOU (我的狗 蚪蚪) is not ranked by Box Office Mojo. Based on its ranking in CFEA, it probably grossed between US$37,549 and US$41,781 from a probable 12 screens. This is not too different from RUBY SPARKS, which means the family film also failed to connect with a wider audience.

Meanwhile, RESIDENT EVIL: RETRIBUTION takes a understandable huge plunge of 68.2% in its second week. Nevertheless, it manages to hang onto the top spot and has grossed US$1,826,451 to date. This is comparable to AFTERLIFE, the last film in the franchise which dipped 61.8% in its second week but also managed to hold onto the top spot while having grossed US$1,706,419.

VULGARIA (低俗喜劇), which has grossed US$38,303 in its second week from 3 screens looks like its performing not too indecently for such a limited release.

The total top ten collection of US$1,319,957 is down 32.56% from a year ago when JOHNNY ENGLISH REBORN ruled for a second week and the top ten films grossed a total of US$1,957,304.
