STEP UP leads a pack of lacklustre debuts

3 Sep 2012

SINGAPORE - STEP UP: REVOLUTION takes the top spot with US$717K in what is once again a week of modest and disappointing debuts. PARANORMAN (US$149K) and DIARY OF A WIMPY KID: DOG DAYS (US$136K) start at no. 3 and 5 respectively while THE CAMPAIGN trails behind at no. 6 with a weak US$99K.

Missing from Box Office Mojo are two other debuts - the 7th and 8th local releases of the year, IMPERFECT (我们都不完美) and MY GHOST PARTNER (人鬼拍档). By comparing Box Office Mojo to CFEA's Top 10, IMPERFECT probably grossed between US$149 - $255K from a probable 15 screens while THE GHOST PARTNER probably started with less than US$37K from a probable 2 screens.

Box Office Mojo and CFEA also differed slightly in their ranking of the no.10 film. This is probably due to a marginal difference, as evident by the US$129 separating THE BOURNE LEGACY (ranked no. 10 by Box Office Mojo) from IN THE COLD LIGHT OF DAY (ranked no. 10 by CFEA). LEGACY has now grossed US$2.2m (4th week) while IN THE COLD LIGHT OF DAY has grossed US$159K (2nd week).

Meanwhile, THE EXPENDABLES 2 has grossed US$2.38m and is the10th highest grosser of the year, while all-time box office champ THE AVENGERS has just passed the US$11m mark.

Compared to a year ago when THE SMURFS led the top ten films to a total gross of US$2.29m, this weekend's top ten total of US$1.74m represented a 24.08% dip in total box office takings.
