RETRIBUTION tops box office!

17 Sep 2012

SINGAPORE - RESIDENT EVIL: RETRIBUTION is the 12th film to cross US$1m in its opening weekend. Its gross of US$1,199,246 is a marginal improvement over the last instalment, RESIDENT EVIL: AFTERLIFE which grossed US$1,034,050 exactly two years ago to a final tally of US$1,956,457. Its screen average of US$16,891 from 71 screens is a marginal dip from AFTERLIFE's US$17,526 screen average from 59 screens. Factoring in the higher ticket prices this year (plus the availability of 2 IMAX prints), the Resident Evil franchise is actually witnessing a marginal dip in interest, but not by too much.

The big screen conclusion to the television drama, THE FIERCE WIFE FINAL EPISODE (犀利人妻) rakes in US$168,065 over the weekend. It overtakes LOVE () to become the highest debut for a Taiwanese film in 2012. It's also the sixth highest Mandarin language film debut this year, after WE NOT NAUGHTY (孩子不坏(US$261,105), PAINTED SKIN: THE RESURRECTION (画皮 II) (U$227,595), THE FOUR (四大名捕) (US$207,004), THE VIRAL FACTOR (逆戰) (US$189,556) and IMPERFECT (我们都不完(US$179,599/S$224,000).

The South Korean heist thriller, THE THIEVES and the Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones led relationship comedy drama, HOPE SPRINGS both debut to moderate results with a gross of US$74,413 and US$63,241 respectively. HOPE has now accumulated a total of US$96,536 including sneak previews from the previous weekend.

Pang Ho-cheung's comedy VULGARIA (低俗喜劇) gets missed out by Box Office Mojo, but a debut below US$24,180 from a probable 3 screens is likely.

The local zombie horror comedy, HSIEN OF THE DEAD gets four screenings at Lido but has been left out of tabulations, possibly due to the fact that it was screened and distributed independently.

Note that CFEA ranks PARANORMAN below HOPE SPRINGS.

The top ten total gross continue a downward slide for the fourth straight weekend as it dips 14.74% to US$2,167,623 compared to a year ago when JOHNNY ENGLISH REBORN debut at no.1 and led the top ten films to a total gross of US$2,542,512.
