TED scores big and claims top spot!

10 Sep 2012

SINGAPORE - Adult comedy TED debuts on top with US$707,468 and a muscular screen average of US$20,808. It's the biggest debut for a M18 movie so far this year, the 3rd to debut at no. 1 and the 12th film to score a screen average above US$20K this year. The version screening in Singapore is an edited version. All other debuts fared meekly or terribly.

Managing a weak US$23,951 from 11 screens and a screen average of US$2,177 is the Thai teen romance SEVEN SOMETHING. The Korean erotic thriller, THE SCENT grossed US$8,320 from 2 screens (average US$4,160) while THE WOMAN IN THE FIFTH collects US$5,539 from a single screen.

The weakest debut is 29 FEBRUARI. The romance drama about a man who ages once every four years marks the first Malay 3D film release in Singapore, and is also the first of a slew of Malay films produced by KRU Studios being distributed by Golden Village Pictures. Opening on 4 screens, 29 FEBRUARI grossed a total of US$4,986 for a very weak screen average of US$1,247.

Missing from Box Office Mojo's ranking is Mamaoru Hosoda's WOLF CHILDREN. The animated flick about a single mother raising her two children who can turn into wolves is a Filmgarde exclusive opening on 2 screens.

In its second week of release, IMPERFECT (我们都不完美) collects another US$120,342 for a total of US$370,260 from 14 screens.
Last year, THE ULTIMATE WINNER (赢家) had grossed US$174,625 by its second weekend on its way to a final tally of US$284,836. IMPERFECT has surpassed that and is now the year's 4th highest local grosser and 7th highest Mandarin language film to date this year.  Both films are produced by Cornerstone Pictures.

THE GHOST PARTNER (人鬼拍档), also in it second week takes in an additional US$5,325 for a to-date total of US$18,994 from 2 screens, making it the lowest grossing local film this year. This unfavorable title is likely to be assumed next week by HSIEN OF THE DEAD, a zombie comedy opening on one screen with one session a day.

And just for the record, SEVEN SOMETHING is ranked no. 10 on CFEA's chart, while Box Office Mojo has THE BOURNE LEGACY ranked above SEVEN SOMETHING. This is probably due to the difference in data collected by both rankings. On Box Office Mojo, the difference separating both films' gross this weekend is a marginal US$1,598.

The top ten box office is down 8.38% compared to a year ago when THE SMURFS spent a second week on top of the box office.
