SINGAPORE - THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE claims the top spot with US$1,998,806 from 91 screens (including IMAX) for a red hot US$21,965 screen average. It's the 8th biggest debut of the year, the 17th film to debut above US$1m and the 17th to achieve a screen average above US$20,000.
CATCHING FIRE debuts stronger than the first film due to a larger screen count, but earned slightly less per screen. Last March, THE HUNGER GAMES started with US$1,374,433 from 56 screens for a scorching US$24,543 screen average and finished with US$3,729,893. CATCHING FIRE could find its way to a US$4.1m-US$5.4m total, which would guarantee it a spot amongst this year's 10 top grossers.
Last weekend's top film, CAPTAIN PHILLIPS drops to no. 2 as the Tom Hanks high sea drama takes in another US$321,445 for a US$1,190,917 total to date. It's the 41st film to gross above US$1m this year and will likely finish with around US$1.4m.
THOR: THE DARK WORLD picks up another US$177, 804 to cross the US$6m mark. The Marvel pic is currently the 3rd highest grosser of the year with US$6,124,881 on its way to a US$6.1m-US$6.4m finish.
Other debuts include Korean thriller COMMITMENT (US$26,410), the Wong Jing produced -197°C MURDER 冰裸杀 (US$13,329), crime mystery CLOSED CIRCUIT (US$13,045) and JFK assassination drama PARKLAND (US$4,098).
Meanwhile, Anthony Chen's ILO ILO 爸妈不在家 gets a re-release to coincide with its historic 6 nominations for the Golden Horse Awards. It grosses a further US$6,249 for a US$703,109 total to date.
Michelle Chong's 3 PEAS IN A POD 他她他 grosses another US$32,980 for a US$193,723 total to date. Look for her road trip romance to finish anywhere between US$225K to US$353K.
Juno Mak's RIGOR MORTIS 僵尸 sneaks over the weekend and collects US$19,432.
Overall, the top ten films grossed US$2,723,588 - a 50.3% increase from the last weekend, but a 18.18% dip from the same frame a year ago when THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN - PART 2 debut at no. 1.
