SINGAPORE - CAPTAIN PHILLIPS grabs hold of no. 1 with US$604,232 from 32 screens and a hearty US$18,882 screen average. Throw in sneaks and the Tom Hanks thriller has collected US$698,186 to date. Reviews from critics and the audience are generally strong but the high sea pic will face stiff competition from THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE which opens next week. A final tally in the range of US$1.2m-US$1.6m is likely.
Former two week reigning champion THOR: THE DARK WORLD collects another US$543,610 which boosts the Marvel Asgard pic to an astounding US$5,807,849 tally. It's now the third highest grosser of 2013 and looks set to finish with US$6m-US$6.5m. If it hits the upper range of this forecast, it'll overtake AH BOYS TO MEN 2 新兵正传 II (US$6,366,469) to become the 2nd highest grosser of the year behind IRON MAN 3 (US$10,210,551).
Meanwhile, Michelle Chong's 3 PEAS IN A POD 他她他 starts with US$120,828 (including sneaks) from 20 screens and a lukewarm US$4,853 screen average. The 12th domestic release of the year opens weaker than the last domestic film, ILO ILO 爸妈不在家 which started with US$187,530 (including sneaks) from 15 screens. Two years ago, Michelle Chong's feature debut ALREADY FAMOUS 一泡而红 grossed US$547,199 from 21 screens during its opening weekend (including sneaks) and finished with US$1,010,384. 3 PEAS is likely to conclude its run in the range of US$223K to US$433K.
Other debuts this week include the animated adventure JUSTIN AND THE KNIGHTS OF VALOUR (US$72,585); dance flick MAKE YOUR MOVE (US$25,507); PERFECT MOTHERS starring Naomi Watts and Robin Wright (US$11,302); Norwegian high sea adventure KON-TIKI which opens on a single screen (US$4,092); Hong Kong coming-of-age romance A SECRET BETWEEN US 第一次 不是你 (US$2,584); and the Japanese sci-fi romance REAL (box office figures not available for this FilmGarde exclusive which opens on 2 screens).
Overall, the top ten films made off with a US$1,811,655 bounty, a 19.9% dip from the last weekend and a 27.2% dip from the same frame a year ago when AH BOYS TO MEN 新兵正传 held on to the no.1 spot for a second weekend.
