SINGAPORE - THOR: THE DARK WORLD conquers the box office with a total tally of US$2,858,414 from 97 screens for a thunderous US$29,468 screen average, including 3D and IMAX screens. This is the 2nd biggest debut of the year, behind only IRON MAN 3, which soared into cinemas with US$3,761,476 in the final weekend of April. It's also the 4th biggest screen average debut behind IRON MAN 3 (US$37,995), FAST & FURIOUS 6 (US$35,363) and G.I. JOE: RETALIATION (US$30,241).
Two years ago, THOR opened with US$1,777,475 on 70 screens and finished with US$4,250,375. Expect this sequel to gross between US$5.4m to US$5.6m, which will easily guarantee it a spot in the year end Top 5. The current top grossers of 2013 are IRON MAN 3 (US$10,210,551); AH BOYS TO MEN 2 新兵正传 II (US$6,336,469); DESPICABLE ME 2 (US$5,648,430); MAN OF STEEL (US$5,020,889) and FAST & FURIOUS 6 (US$4,719,607).
Last weekend's top film, ESCAPE PLAN drops to the runner-up spot with a total collection of US$1,130,466 to date. It's the 41st film to cross US$1m this year. A final tally around US$1.42m is likely.
Other debuts this week include the animated feature FREE BIRDS (US$48,618), the Japanese horror SADAKO 2 (US$28,198) and the Brian De Palma thriller, PASSION (US$10,534).
Although SADAKO 2 is available in 3D, the format's popularity has taken a further dip this year with many recent titles being screened domestically only in 2D. This includes Tsui Hark's YOUNG DETECTIVE DEE: RISE OF THE SEA DRAGON 狄仁杰之神都龙王; Thai horror THE SECOND SIGHT and Korean drama MR. GO.
Overall, the top ten films grossed US$3,480,944 - the 7th highest of the year to date, with THOR: THE DARK WORLD accounting for 82.12% of all tickets sold. This is a 96.7% increase from the last weekend and a 31.04% increase from the same frame a year ago when SKYFALL debut at no. 1.
