SINGAPORE - THOR: THE DARK WORLD continues its reign at no. 1, with another US$1,322,714 bringing its total to US$4,954,073. Not only has it outgrossed its predecessor (US$4,250,375), but it's now the 5th highest grossing films of the year, and also one of only 4 films that managed to gross more than US$1m over 2 weekends. The other films being AH BOYS TO MEN 2 新兵正传 II, IRON MAN 3 and DESPICABLE ME 2. The Marvel pic accounted for 58.52% of all tickets sold from Thursday thru Sunday, and its strong second week showing gives DARK WORLD a shot at reaching anywhere between US$5.8m-US$6.4m by the end of its run.
Sci-fi entrant ENDER'S GAME debuts in the runner up spot with US$427,791 from 30 screens and a screen average of US$14,260 - that's just marginally lower than DARK WORLD (US$14,535), the top screen average earner this weekend. A finish in the range of US$892K and US$1.1m is likely.
Tony Jaa's latest action flick TOM YUM GOONG 2 is new with US$151,471 and may complete its run in the range of US$283K-US$339K.
Other debuts include Chinese horror BABY BLUES 诡婴 (US$53,371); Joseph Gordon-Levitt's directorial debut DON JON (US$52,370), which is released in an edited R21 version for the local market and the romantic comedy ENOUGH SAID starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus and the late James Gandolfini (US$35,045, including sneaks).
TOM YUM GOONG 2 and BABY BLUES 诡婴 are only the latest releases where an available 3D print is not being screened for the Singapore market, a continuing sign of the format's decline in popularity. The IMAX version of ENDER'S GAME is also not released.
Meanwhile, 3 PEAS IN A POD 他她他, Michelle Chong's follow-up to ALREADY FAMOUS 一泡而红 collects US$23,763 from 18 sneak preview screens. Back in 2011, FAMOUS started with an incredible US$108,723 from 16 sneak preview screens for a US$1,010,384 finish. 3 PEAS, which is slapped with a higher NC-16 rating looks unlikely to reach the same heights. Its numbers are closer to ILO ILO 爸妈不在家, which sneaked on 15 screens back in August for a US$28,729 total and a US$695,351 final. ILO ILO is currently the 3rd highest grossing domestic film of the year.
Overall, the top ten films collected US$2,260,462, a 35.1% drop from last weekend and a 20.04% from the same frame a year ago when AH BOYS TO MEN 新兵正传 debut at no. 1 while SKYFALL commanded the no. 2 spot.
