SINGAPORE - 47 RONIN debuts at no. 1 with US$983,262 from 49 screens (including 3D) and scores a scorching US$20,067 screen average. It's the 18th film to debut with a screen average above US$20k this year. The Keanu Reeves period action fantasy looks set to finish in the range of US$2-US$2.4m.
Dropping into the runner-up spot is THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG, which picks up an additional US$695,893 for a US$2,925,486 total to date. It's still on track to finish with about US$4.3m.
The family friendly WALKING WITH DINOSAURS opened to lacklustre results with US$274,872 from 41 screens (including 3D) for a US$6,704 screen average. It may conclude its run in the range of US$690K.
Other debuts include Oscar hopeful drama 12 YEARS A SLAVE (US$29,419 from 5 screens) and the comedy THE STARVING GAMES (US$25,743 from 7 screens).
One of two final domestic releases this year, I HUGGED THE BERLIN PATIENT enters its third week of screening. The independent documentary has grossed US$7,808 to date.
Box office results for Indian movies aren't available but Bollywood blockbuster, DHOOM 3 which broke into the US Top 10 this past weekend may well also be the first Indian movie to be screened domestically in Dolby Atmos.
Meanwhile, Disney's FROZEN leaps past MONSTERS UNIVERSITY to become the top grossing animated pic and14th highest grosser of the year with US$2,756,119 to date and counting.
Overall, the weekend saw US$2,497,349 worth of tickets sold from the top ten films - a 12% decline from the past weekend and a 13.52% dip from the same frame a year ago when CHINESE ZODIAC εδΊηθ debut at no. 1.
