SINGAPORE - THE HOBBIT: THE DESOLATION OF SMAUG debuts at no. 1 with US$1,750,602 from 102 screens for a robust US$17,163 screen average. It's the 18th title to debut above US$1m this year.
Last year, THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY started with US$1,729,846 from 107 screens on its way to a US$4,319,103 finish. SMAUG is likely to conclude its run in the same range. Just as with AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY, screenings are offered in 2D, 3D, IMAX 3D, IMAX HFR 3D, HFR 3D, 2D ATMOS and 3D ATMOS.
Last week's top film, FROZEN drops to no. 2. It grosses another US$342,587 for a US$2,305,465 total to date. The well received Disney pic may end its run in the range of US$2.4-US$2.6m. It's already the second highest grossing animated film of the year behind MONSTERS UNIVERSITY (US$2,661,042).
Debuting in 3rd place is the Andy Lau police action thriller FIRESTORM 风暴 which grossed US$245,281 from 26 screens for a decent US$9,434 screen average. A finish in the range of US$427K-US$516K is likely. As with many recent non-Hollywood offerings, the 3D version is being bypassed in Singapore.
Other debuts include the comedy LAST VEGAS which stars Michael Douglas, Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman and Kevin Kline (US$70,927); French comedy CHINESE PUZZLE (US$9,078), Hong Kong thriller CONTROL 控制 (US$8,435); French drama THÉRÈSE DESQUEYROUX (US$2,353) and Roman Polanski's latest, VENUS IN FUR (US$1,597). Both THÉRÈSE and VENUS are single print releases.
Overall, the top ten films grossed US$2,838,775, a 42.2% increase from the last weekend and a 2.62% increase from the same frame a year ago when THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY debut at no. 1.
